Yup in London most places impose a service charge when u claim VAT. End up u get only abt 10-13% back.

In Paris i think u'll get d full 12% but if u wanna get cash refund, they'll charge u abt 2.5 euros PER receipt. So if u got 10 receipts, they'll take 25euros.

Nope in Paris cash refund get back only 10.8 % only , 3 Euro admin charge. Thats what i get when i claimed last friday

Guys, since we are on this subject, we bought an LV bag (ladies) from Florence, Italy but didn't manage to claim it as we were travelling by train back to Munich, Switzerland and few back to SG from there.

I now have the train tickets showing the travel between Florence, Milan and Munich. Who should I write to in Italy in customs to get the customs stamp? and if yes, how then will the customs send it back to me in SG, I'll have to post again personally after that the customs clearance form to Global Blue there in Italy?

I thing no way to claim, cos u have to show your passport, and they want to see u in person and also the goods u buy at customs side. Same thing at the claim point. That is my exp....

if i fly into London, then Eurostar to Paris, and train to Milan.
Depart from Milan back to SG. Can I still claim tax rebate in Milan for purchases made in London and Paris ?

How does it work?

Get the tax refund slip from the place u purchase LV / Gucci / Chanel / Printemps / Lafayette etc...

When you're departing , bring the slips and goods to airport for examination to get a chop.

Then mail one of the slip at the post box inside the airport

Bring the other slip to the refund counter and make your claim.

Lastest update for purchase of LV in europe. Different EU countries have slightly different limitations.

In Amsterdam, 1 bag/wallet + 1 accessory(belt, small leather item etc)
In Venice, 1 bag/wallet + 2 accessories(belt, small leather item etc)
In Paris. 1 bag/wallet + 1 accessory(belt, small leather item etc)

Result for limitation: Not enough leather to manufacture the products.

When you enter a new EU country, the limitation is resetted again. Tested and proved by me. Travelled to Amsterdam,Venice, Paris etc. :)

That reason given is, of course, just diplomatic, and is complete rubbish.

The real reason is two-fold:

(1) Counterfeiters
(2) Resellers

Only Asian-looking customers have this limitation.

I've heared about this, but to be honest, I have never been hit by this before. I've went into LV and bought something like 5 bags and went out with no problems.

The entire purchases set me back by around 10K Euros? And before anyone thinks that I'm rich, these were all for my friends / colleagues.

Hi Inix,

I guess you didn't get the tourist "treatment" because of three reasons:

(1) You didn't look, sound, nor act like a tourist. Good French! :)
(2) You didn't buy more than two of the same model of bag.
(3) Your purchases included some limited edition models, not just the "standard" models.

I always love surprising the French people with my lousy French, and getting the "long lost family" treatment, rather than the "oh yet another tourist without etiquette" treatment. :)

Is LV & Chanel cheaper in Paris or Venice?
TIA!!

cheaper in France but Italy is only slightly more ex. like 10-15Euro. Minimal difference.

Was in Paris just 2 weeks ago. The limit on number of LV or Chanel is totally untrue. Bought many without issue.

The only issue we had was at the custom. Took a while to convince them they were all for personal consumption and not for resale.

I think a lot of China Chinese are doing this re-sale business. Either they take the bags out of EU, with the tax refunds and then re-sell them back in EU or overseas.
The custom was checking every Chinese while the white were not checked.

I was told that we have to hide the dust bags and throw away boxes & paper bags because if we carry those in.
Sg customs will charge tax on the items and if gone undeclared, a fine would be imposed.
Furthermore, am told the legal quota is S$300 b4 tax is imposed. Which is ridiculous cus a bag can be min 1k & above.

A few more qns, hope u dont mind:

How did you bring your bags back to SG? As in how did you pack, in dust bags or you had to pack them bare & remove all packaging.

Did you have a hard time at SG customs too? Or it was just Europe customs that required convincing?

Tax rebate differs in both Italy & France? Which one least hassle-free?

How about models available, usually hear that China tourists sweep the entire boutiques out.... Both Italy & France boutiques, which one has more stuff available?

Thanks so much for your help :)

pack in dust bag and threw everything else (box etc..) away. Even if you're being charged GST in SG, you're already saving a lot of money comparing prices in SG vs Europe.

hassle is the tax refund company that the retailer use. Chanel uses Premier Tax which forces people to take the money back in other currency and the rebate was lower than everyone else to start with. Global Blue is very good and hassle free.

Models, you've to grab whatever that's available anyway price difference between france and italy is minimal unless you're talking about UK.
China tourist clean sweep everything they see off the shelve. For Hermes, Chanel and LV that we went. France has better selection, generally speaking. Prada, of course Italy has more selection/stock

sorry but I tot for VAT refund; you simply consolidate all the receipts, get them stamped and collect back at the airport?

do you mean we need to go back to the respective refund company at the airport?
