I have a PM from a fellow student regarding electives i have attempted and taken before. Since i am sharing with him, i might as well share with everyone, so that there wun be more of these threads during the add/drop period.. Here you go:
HP 806 Psychology of Crisis Stress Management Grade: A
This is my favourite elective of all. Lessons have never been so enjoyable. The adjunt professor tells lots of stories he encounter as a police psychology. The notes were easy to understand and study as well. Most of the time, lecture last for 1.5 hour, so you can go home early.
There is a midterm mcq quiz which is very easy, but you have to complete it fast. There is no time for checking. Final consist of mcqs, structured and essay. The mcqs and structured are no brainer, but the essay is choose 1 qn out of 2, worth 40 point. This determines your chiam tao. The good point is, this whole module is about helping victims or helpers, so you can write and memorize a general essay before the exam, just go in regurgitate and modify abit.
EE8086 Astronomy, Stars and Galaxies Grade: A+
The lecture is often split into 2 parts, 1.5 hr lecture and 1.5 hr watch video. The lecture is not interesting as the professor is not lively, but the video is interesting. You can skip the videos and go home, which I did every time. For last semester, all the lectures are recorded, so basically you can pon everything go home watch e-lecture.
This is also one of the favourite elective among students because of the nature of the exam. The assessment consists of 1 midterm quiz with 15 mcqs and final with 50 mcqs.
BUT, be warned. There is lots of content to study and the mcqs are nowhere easy. They are pretty tricky and you have to really know your stuff well, or you wun get your chiam tao.
Tip: Do all the past year paper which is provided from this sem onwards and also buy the textbook. Inside the textbook there is a key, which you can log on to an online resource. Inside the online resource there is tons of mcqs practice question. Not the same as exam but good for foundation. One person buy the text can share the online resource among everyone.
CBC801 Impact of Chemistry on Society Grade: A+
This is a no brainer chemistry elective. The contents taught are basically “A” level chemistry stuff and some environmental things. It can go to as basic as type of bonds (covelent/ionic) and structure of water molecule.
Most students skip the lectures as it’s really too basic if you have taken chemistry before. There is a midterm quiz worth 30%. Both midterm and final have same format, mcqs with structured.
The problem comes here. This elective is way too easy, and many people are scoring 90+ for quiz. You can imagine how badly the bell curve is stretch to. I have heard people who have 80++ for quiz getting a B for this module. Furthermore, there are many CBC and CBE students in this elective. So arts students who are not s/uing this module stay away. It’s a risky elective to me.
CBC811 Forensic Science Grade: A
One of the more interesting module around. 50% of the lectures are conducted by external lecturer, 50% by ntu professor. Those by external lectures have no notes, so you have to attend them. The materials will be tested in small proportion, perhaps 10%.
The other 50% by ntu professor has previous year lectures upload, so you can pon and watch e-lecture at home. Overall, the notes are easy to study and understand, especially if you have chemistry background.
The assessment consists of a 20% midterm with 25mcqs. The quiz is very easy. Average for this sem is 22/25 if I am not wrong. The finals consist of mcqs and a case study. The difficulty lies in the case study. Whether you get chiam tao depend on the case study. A scenario will be depicted, and clues will be given in the text and picture. What you need to do is find these clues, and give your reasoning who is the murderer or suspect etc. It is not something where you can study. They are testing whether you can apply what you have learned in this module to real cases. Easy or not, it is really up to individual.
MB 107 Fundamental of Business Law Grade: S
Most students gotta clear a business elective and i would recommend this one if you wanna s/u it. The contents are easy and straightforward, and can be pretty interesting to me.
There is no midterm quiz, and the assessment is 20% in class participation and 80% on finals. The final is an open book exam and you can bring anything in to copy. There are weekly tutorials and depending on who your tutorial professor is, you might have to present your tutorial solutions. Do note that this module provide no tutorial solutions. You have to do them, and correct them as you attend the tutorial.
The final is a breeze if you did your work consistently. The questions are not far away from tutorial questions, and in fact, nearly the same. I just find which tutorial the question is in, copy copy and copy. If you wanna score, attempt the pyp. There are tons of them, and you can see a pattern as questions on the same topic are repeated over the years.
It is advisable to get tutorials from seniors as you can save quite an amount of time. Do note there are 2 different set of tutorials which alternate between each sem. So if you are taking this module this sem, do not get last semester tutorials. Get the tutorials from last last sem.
HS 816 Understand Singapore Society Grade: S
This module is not easy to score for most science student. The lecture is pretty interesting and the professor dares to comment on lots of things, including politics. There are videos in between lectures.
The lectures are typical of a sociology module. The materials for each lecture are perhaps 10 odd slides in point form on the main issues only. During lectures, the professor will just talk and talk on how he feels on the issue. Each lecture is supplemented with 2-3 articles and they are a real pain. Words are small and many pages. The articles are for self reading and will be tested in exams in form of mcqs.
Assessment consists of midterm quiz worth 30% and final. Format is mcq + essay. The mcq are tough as they can come from anywhere within the article. The essay is worse as it really depend on whether the professor likes your viewpoint.
In short, dun take this elective unless you are good with argumentative essay.
Others:
These are electives which have been passed on from seniors to be the easy ones. I have not taken them as i have almost cleared all my electives. Nevertheless, there is not shortcut to chiam tao. The electives can be easy, but you need to put in some effort as well.
