No need. You just drop by any National Park Service office and buy. There is even an office in Fisherman's Wharf in SF. Since it is valid for one year, come back and based on expiry like COE, sell to the next guy who is going to the US and needs it. It is available to anyone!

No GPS is separate. Doesn't come with the pass. :s13:

How does the pass help? My wife going with me. Is 1 pass = entry for 2 person?
Maybe going Muir Woods, Grand Canyon, Point Lobos.

I see GPS amazon price also like quite ex? Get 2nd hand from eBay or get at airport?

I'd be driving at SF / GC / Anaheim to LA. If get GPS, is it a MUST to get the lane assist feature?

Cheers.

Yeah..any model that you recommend. Probably getting this for my coasting road trip hehe ;)

For budget rentals, I think the Mitsubishi Eclipse or the Ford Mustang. If not you can always go to luxury car rentals and try a Volvo or better :)

Maybe going Muir Woods, Grand Canyon, Point Lobos.

Muir is part of the US National Park Service so you can use the pass. Point Lobos cannot use because it is a State Reserve. So it belongs to the state and not the USNPS.

I make it very clear for the rest reading this thread.

USNPS park can use America The Beautiful pass. State park, state reserve, state monument etc belongs to the state so cannot use.

For example when I was in Kanab, UT, the Coral Pink Sand Dunes are just very near but I didn't go. Why? It is a state park. Must pay because they don't accept the USNPS pass. In NV on my way back, I didn't stop by Valley of Fire State Park. Why? State park. Doesn't belong to the USNPS. So if you sorta wanna save money and use the pass, you will forego the state parks usually.

Some places belong to the Navajo nation. So you also cannot use the USNPS pass. For example, Monument Valley belongs to Navajo nation so cannot use the USNPS pass. I would gladly pay to go into Monument Valley if I got the chance.

As for entry I think they allow one car with 4 people maximum. Damn worth it considering 1 car with 4 people already more than USD100 w/o the pass. So with two people and a car, you visit two national park, "break even" already.

Oops, but 8+ hours drive to Grand Canyon is ok, split it into few segments. I bought my car in Illinois, drove it back to LA.

driving tips wanted thks!

Hi, am planning a trip along the East Coast.

But.. is it safe for noob drivers like myself to travel along I-95? Would like to experience a scenic road trip for a change =:p=:p=:p, so trying to brush up my driving skills now.

What should I take note of besides the left hand driving and learning the U.S. road signs? My main worries are hurricanes, wildlife and aggressive/drunk drivers .

hurricanes will depend on when/where you travelling. so just check out weather websites/news for weather updates/warning every day of your travel. whenever there are hurricane warnings...do not go out or drive.

if you're talking about wildlife coming onto the roads...that usually occurs when it's dark so you should plan your roadtrip in such a way to avoid driving in the dark (which might be better too if you are a noob driver and not used to the really dark roads in US - unlike in SG, there aren't streetlights on most roads/highways). there'll be signs whenever there are dangers of animal crossings so you just stay alert at all times.

as for drunk drivers...you'd never know would you? drivers in the states aren't very aggressive...in fact, most of them have very good driving etiquettes e.g. giving way, not honking, move to next lane to allow traffic to merge with ease etc. the key is not to hog the overtaking lane if you aren't overtaking or driving fast....and try to keep to the legal speeds and not go too slowly.

which stretch of the east coast you planning for your roadtrip? if you just take the I-95...you'll be bored to death. try to take the coastal route or some of the scenic bypass routes but it'll mean longer distances/time. i've done the coastal route from near boston in massachusetts to key west in florida and back...so i might've some info if you need.
