I thought paid apps cannot become free and vice versa. Maybe they uploaded as a new app.

Edit: Or maybe a sneaky update that brings in-app purchases that unlocks the game?

It's very fun, playing it now. I paid around the same price for DGunner 1 and it's still very fun to blow stuff up.
