I was wondering if someone could enlightened me about sharpening survival knives. I have a Gerber LMF II and the angle of the edge is about 15 degrees. My sharpener (Lansky Four Stone Universal Knife Sharpening System) recommends about 25 degrees angle of the edge for survival knives. So should i stick with sharpening the knife at a 17 degree angle or do as the kit says and go with 25

Depends on what you want in your knife. If you want a blade that will hold a decent edge for longer, go for the 25 and regrind it to your liking. If you want to carve a bit and dont mind sharpening it more, 17 can give you a more precise and better cutting edge.

Is the Bear Grylls Survival Knife worth getting? I know nuts about blade quality, just think that the knife looks chio with the orange highlights plus the firestarter/flint stick thing looks like it'll be useful.

Anyone got thoughts on the knife?

It's ok as a starter package i guess, since it comes with a ****ty sharpener and a tiny firesteel and a whistle. Gerber quality is :s22: most of the time and worse still they don't even state the name of the steel. If you want a cheap emergency knife to throw into your storeroom, its fine i guess. BTW i reco getting the new plain edge version, or even better an LMF. But if you plan to collect something nice or use it regularly, might as well spend a bit more to get a better knife..

Or just make it a convex edge!

knife sexperts

can recommend a leatherman for daily edc??

I'm currently EDC-ing a Leatherman Freestyle CX.

For a knife nut who wants a "knife" that is extremely sheeple friendly, light and small enough to carry in the pocket(120ish gram I believe), and of acceptable blade length and steel(subjective) in the form of a 2.5" 154CM, nothing beats a Freestyle CX IMO.

Depends on how much weight and bulk you are willing to carry and what capabilities you need. Some people may carry a super tool 300 as edc, while some may just carry a little squirt.

Ah! forget the Enlan! LOL.. seems like nobody's quite interested in chinese folders in sg.. at least here in hwz.

Nevermind that.. For all you knife nut bros.. The agonizing wait is finally over..

Was too late in the game for a pre-order.. But.. It was a blessing in disguise!

Serious missons, serious knives.. Seriously broke as well..

Here's how it looks like out of the package
03closed.jpg

That's some long folder! (Overall length of abt 8.75")
04opened.jpg

3D machined titanium and G10 scales with steel liners. There is
skeletonizing on the inside of the titanium scales as well as the liners.

Lightly stone-washed ELMAX steel.. Awesome grind!

About 50% lockup.. And a sticky one too..

HUGE stand-offs!! But what the.. the.. scales are really thin for
the size of the knife..

Hinderer design
09hindererdesign.jpg

Normal looking thumbstud.. Nothing fanciful..
10thumbstud.jpg

Check out the detent ball! Detent is damnnnn strong! I guess it's meant to
be, cuz it slingshots the blade out real quick when deployed with the flipper
11detent.jpg

Nice and functional stainless steel clip.. Prefer this to those of ZT055X..
12clip.jpg

Makes me cringe when I see how thin that slab of G10 is..
Edit: Ok, it seems thin because of the contour. The G10 gets tapered off towards the edge.

Blade is nicely centered! Well done ZT!

Size comparison
15sizecomparo.jpg

Pros:
- Gorgeous and long(~4") blade with a good amount of cutting edge
- Don't let the size fool you! This folder feels really light!
- Pivot action: KVT system is way butteryyyyyyy smooth!
- Lockup is firm and solid with absolutely no blade play
- Grip provides wonderful traction and ergo is great as well
- Hair-popping sharp out of the box
- Low riding pocket clip ; 4 way carry(left right up down)
- Huge and thick stand-offs
- Contoured 3D machined scales is aesthetically pleasing
- Hey! It's designed by Mr Hinderer(trademark flipper and lockbar stabilizer)!

Cons:
- Light weight of knife mitigates "confidence inspiring" feel
- Feels rough/coarse/harsh/unrefined in the hands (Ever handled a Gerber before?)
Damn I feel so bad comparing ZT to a Gerber..

Overall impression? Hmmm... I would say slightly underwhelmed given the hype
of this folder. Why? Because it doesn't quite feel as good as a hinderer XM folder,
by a long shot(I once handled a friend's XM-18). But still, as you can see,
the pros far outweigh the cons.

So, in most aspects, including the price, this folder is.. should I say value
for money? Ok, that's subjective.. But anyway, if you are really hard up for
a Hinderer XM but couldn't see yourself getting one be it due to the scarcity
or the uber inflated price, then this should satisfy your craving.. at least
temporarily.

what about the Enlan?
show some pics too for comparison! hows the build quality.?

Size comparison of Enlan EL08(bottom most) with other folders

Build quality is generally acceptable given the low price of this knife. Only gripe is that there are machining marks on the lock bar itself and the cut-out portion.

I don't really use my knives that frequently. I'm more of a collector, some say accumulator LOL..

Most of the times, I use my knife to open the package of another new knife.. :D It's this self sustaining mechanism that makes it an expensive hobby..
