I have a similar experience after doing a half hour audition with my buddy's DX100.

Was intending to buy the DX100 thinking that it will be better than my HM-801. As usual gadget person's bad habit, thinking that new gadget should always be better than old one.

Tested same songs with DX100 and HM-801 and concluded that I can keep my 801 and save the money for other gadgets (ordered a new 801 spare battery and charger).

Maybe my own ears preference, but it is very difficult to find a DAP that can play songs and music with analogue sounds - which only HM-801 comes very close to it, yet with details and soundstage. DX100 is very analytical and clear, but it is like most modern players. If you already have a good iPod, you can probably try out the Fostex HP-P1 or CLAS, as they both generate very analytical and clean sound and good soundstage.

Sold my Fostex quite sometimes back so can't do direct comparison, but to me, HM-801 sounds nicer and smoother.

Anyway, if you are upgrading from a iPod, you will definitely not be disappointed with DX100. It is one of the best DAP available, and you can't get a HM-801 any more since it is out of production now!

Decided to give the DX100 one more chance and audition it again but this time brought my own FLAC favorites in a microSD card. Conclusion is still My HM-801 sounds better than dx100.

Those who have DX100 - enjoy your music man. Please audition the HM-801 if you all have the chance.

bro, any specific reason why you prefer hm-801 instead? curious to also know what type of songs you normally listen to.

i like clarity and vocals a lot, still contemplating whether to get the dx100 or not...

I listen to all sort of songs. Currently listening to Adele live in Royal Albert Hall or something like that - in FLAC of course

Now there are a few DAP out there in this league - HM-801, DX100, Colorfly C4 and all of them are pricey investments. So I do encourage our brothers here to really audition them if you can before spending your hard earn money

We should really audition the DX100, C4 and the HM801 with some really high end accurate studio monitors.(with ABX). That would be the fairest comparison for sound quality.

DX100 users, can you help describe what difference you heard with the DX100 vs other gears/dacs?

I have notice the DX100 has the ability to:

retain coherency with complex and fast music(Techno, Metal).

reproduce the quietest of details not normally noticeable on other dacs.

reproduce instruments that sound true to life(drum beats with texture, cymbals with metal shimmering, flute sounds that decays properly, gutairs with accurate riffs and twag)

present dynamics with strength that exceed what you normally hear

deliver extended sub bass not found in other dacs

present extended trebles that doesn't sound harsh which normally would sound harsh on other dacs

present vocals that sounds very intelligible across all music genres

Have seen such placebo effect for all new gadgets when they are newly launched - read a lot of really wonderful reviews in the past for iMod4, iMod5, Cowon D2, S9, J3, Colorfly C4, HM-801, 602, and of course the longest list for the Sony X1060.

Each DAP will have their supporter and no doubts they are all good players. However, all of us would want to feel good after spending so much for a gadget, and sometimes we are too engrossed with sharing all the positive experience that could seems biased.

To be fair to your wallet, take your time to do audition with all the DAP and buy the one that your ears love it, not the one that your eyes see it (i.e. not choosing one by reviews - they are not your ears).

I have bought and sold my HM-801 for 3 times (first one with PCM1704U chip not the U-K chip, second set and the current set with PCM1704U-K chip), all because after reading positive reviews of other DAP and then buy those. Wasted a lot of money and finally still come back to the HM-801, luckily before it is out of production.

Currently still nothing sounds better to my ears than 801. Not even the DX100.

Again, don't take my words for this. Go to try out a few DAP, best if you can do blind-test. Chances are you may just pick a iPod as best sounding (if your ears like it in the blind test) and save a lot of money!

This may/may not be possible, but if you have a few buddies with different DAPs, do a real blind test and get your friends to swop the different DAPs all loaded with the same songs and they must not be telling you which one. If you still can accurately pick out the DX100 for at least 80% of the 10 sample test and that is really your favourite DAP, then this is your BEST DAP!

DX100 pairs well with most gears including the w4. Was it improved with dx100, yes. But dx100 didn't change the sound signature of the w4 much... Which is also a good thing?

I agree with mark_twain as well about not judging solely on reviews itself, my jump towards the DX100 was the close to flat frequency response that I see on the frequency chart. I knew it was the kind of sound I like and it definitely met my expectations.

One main difference the DX100 gives me was how real the music was. The ability to catch minor details, the breathing of the singer during a live performance and not forgetting the ambience of the stage itself.

Another reason was that its the only player that still support 24bit-192khz through the digital out. =) Do correct me if I'm wrong about this.
