Hi.. thanxs for the headsup.. i'll go check this out later tonite when i'm home.. hopefully the DSM i'm using already got this fixed..![]()
Samsung F4 2TB? This drive had big problems with an earlier DSM release on the 1512+. The symptom is that the drive will click every ~21sec, and eventually develop bad sectors and need replacement.
It's fixed on the later DSMs for 1512+, but I don't know if the 412+ is affected in the first place, nor if the fix also affects the 412+.
More details here if u interested: Synology Inc. Online Community Forum - NEW NAS Experience -View topic - DS1512+: HD204UI Load_Cycle_Count increasing every 21sec
Thanks for the review, very informative indeed.
Noticed that your 1st Synology is the 1511+ instead of the current 1512+.
Guess the 1512+ performance may be on par with the 412+?
Just tried running the same test with Jumbo Frame enabled at various values of MTU. Managed to push the xfer speed of Write and Read to about 105MB/sec but it doesnt seem to be stable and consistant compared with Jumbo Frame disabled.. Sometimes the rates will drop to 70 MB/sec during the 5 runs. Without Jumbo Frame, I can maintain consistent results even between each test..
Some devices are accessing your network hence the drop in speed?
Hi everyone, just an update on this.
seems that the new firmware at 2228 has fixed the prob or it doesnt exist on the DS412. I dont notice any clicking sounds when the hdds are idling or working. Checking the Hdparm for the APB_level also returns me 254 which is supposed to be the parameter that solved the click click clicks..
Since the count only went up by 1, then the issue was fully resolved!Hi Chong,
I just did what u wanted. The count only go up by 1 after the Power On. I'll leave the DS412+ to run over nite n see if the count will go up or not.. Hope this helps u.
From my understanding, the issue was a combination of:Anyway, if based on this, Synology is not really solving the problem but just preventing the F4 from going to sleep..
Not really... with the ~21sec bug, the Load_Cycle_Count will increase by ~4100 per day. You'll need 5.6 years to inflict the same amount of damage from power cycling, assuming you do it twice everydayAlso, in any case, if I do keep powering on and off the NAS, say on a daily basis, it's a matter of time the Load_Cycle_Count will hit a freaking big value too..

From my understanding, the issue was a combination of:
- Some F4 firmware will park the heads after ~21sec of no activity when APM level is below a certain value (224 happens to be within this range)
- Synology's DS1512+, 1812+ (and I think 412+) with DSM version 4.0-2198 and older will set the APM value to 224 during every power on
- The F4 drives will fail when the heads are parked every 21s, and will develop bad sectors in a few days.
By right, no APM value that the drive accepts should cause it to self destruct, so IMO the fault ultimately lies with Samsung's F4 design.
