in jan 2008 ahahah
a couple of them did intern with big4

oh ya... I got a church friend who got into KP from SIM-RMIT this july/aug also.

My friends who got into KP last year after graduating deposited their resumes at the CPA fair in 1/2011.

I went with a number of friends from SIM-RMIT to the CPA career fair at the start of the year . Deposited resumes but not a single one got called up for interview by Big 4s or mid tiers.

It has been an utterly disappointing year for us. :(
All of them are in commercial now.

well... looking at resumes... they will look at your hobbies, your cca and determine if there's leadership or teamwork involved.

Also, the manager will judge from the face to face interview... The way a candidate answers his questions will give a clue to the personality

My CCAs involves teamwork but never got called up by a single Big 4. :(

Erm enough of Big 4s. :s13:

Can get into a mid tier also good but I guess I dont have such an opportunity or perhaps the timing is just not right.

It's coming to a year already...

Here's my take from my experience:

If you are looking at a pay cut.. guess you need to look harder for better opportunities

1) No. i think some managerial/supervisory experience in audit is better regarded

2) Too hard to tell. Your connections will open the doors to various industries.

3) Commercial is always hiring, not to worry. And the increments likely won't match your audit increment unless you are promoted, so take that in mind. You will not end up more "qualified" unless that promotion to manager in your commercial job materialises.

4) Higher basic less bonus. Time value of money, and reduce opportunity costs.

5) No idea. I believe it will only help you if you are identified as having potential by your company, unless you are seeking other movement in your career.

thanks Ken and MD for your replies.

There's no reason for me to stay till M1 cos it will mean many sleepless nights and lots of stress and frustration. And i think there's no reason to go thru all these if i dun intend to be partner.

The thing i will miss about the firm would be giving up the huge resources, 20 days AL and opportunities for personal growth such as making presentations, talking to clients and the freedom from being able to manage own time.

But at this point, acquiring commercial experience makes more sense cos i think 3 + 2 years mix of audit and commercial experience will be useful in the future.

But my concern is that joining a smaller than MNC firm now will be a disadvantage to my longer term plan to join MNCs.

and also to add i think audit is better left to FT cos they can work longer hours without many commitments while i have a gf and intend to spend more quality time my family. It is just not the right job fit. Let me share with you guys some turnover statistics, based on my main batch intake, after 3+ years about 70% have left the firm which means 3 out of 10 are still with the firm :)

Are there any differences in turnover rates between FS Assurance and General Assurance?

erm... don't tell me you have been unemployed for almost a year...

quite frankly speaking... if you are unemployed for a period longer than 6 months, without a valid reason, it makes finding a job, alot more difficult...
Potential employers will be wondering why you are unemployed for so long and wouldn't dare to take a risk by hiring you...

Why do Big 4 auditors need to work until so late?
I mean, generally, what keeps the Big 4 auditors so late up to 2-3am during peak period? Is there really such a need?

Because auditors love one another's company so much.

But seriously, its because of the tight reporting deadlines, esp for a public co. And also because of cant be helped factors, like when finance people suddenly go on long leave when auditors come, documents requested ages ago are given only at the last hour, etcetc.

actually, it seems like having a big 4 background is useful for you to move smoothly into commercial later...

But what about mid tier auditing firm experience? I understand that it is not as valued as the big 4 experience but would the experience be valued if I want to enter into commercial after a few years in a mid tier firm?

Can anyone from the mid-tier firms or know of other people's experience share with me about the possible exit route?

Care to explain why? In the midist of planning to take cpa soon. Any views would be greatly appreciated!

It's just the prestige. No explanations. ACA is the most prestigious certification in the UK, which also happens to be the birthplace of IFRS.
Aus cpa isn't even the most prestigious in Aus, that happens to be CA, but either way, most singapore company doesn't care which one you have. As long as you get the job down, it's still just a paper after all.

in that case, do companies (sg) care whether u have cpa aust or sg? thanks
