You can try 2 things. Set Software Compatibility to Windows XP SP3 & disable Funshion from loading during boot-up.

tried that before. doesnt work. the task list in funshion is not working. need reinstall to work.

If still don't work, goto BIOS & enable legacy USB support.

For Windows 7/8, your PnP OS setting should be ON to support ACPI but don't switch it now because Windows may report no-boot device if you switch it on AFTER installing Windows.

In general, always have the latest BIOS & drivers for mobo. I usually just download reference drivers from Intel.

When I enabled Legacy USB support, the computer did not pick up the thumbdrive even though the light on the thumbdrive is lit.

The USB problem is unique in that it will not work on a cold boot (after PC shut off for a few hours), but the USB will work if the PC is restarted soon after shut down.

I have no problem with the front USB ports. Only the back USB ports are affected.

By default it should be able to display Chinese (and other languages) text. If you're seeing garbled text in the filename it could be due to the file itself?

Seriously? I'm seeing rectangular boxes. Not sure if it's because files it's in my other partition d:\.

I format my c:\ and install win 8 OS in c:\ but when I go into my d:\ to see where the files are which I previously saved, it's garbled text in the file names.

Try downloading/creating a new file with a Chinese filename, see if it works.

Check the Firewall settings.

If using Win8 build-in, goto Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall.

If using other, goto the Settings page to enable Funshion including incoming connections.

You may need to Seperately enable Legacy USB Mass Storage if that's the case. Looks like your PnP OS and/or ACPI setting really isn't ON. If not, this shouldn't be a problem.

(WARNING! The following may make Windows unbootable!)
To completely solve this problem, you may want to try to switch on these 2 settings & see if Windows 8 boot properly. If it doesn't, switch them back. If it does, Win8 will start installing new mobo drivers to support the new power states.

Your PC may even boot faster because of this.

How do i get win8 to view Chinese filenames?
If you were using some Chinese input software like HansVision previously, Chinese filenames may not be in Unicode but in older BIG5 or other format which may be unreadable by modern OS.

Try creating a new file with Chinese filename & see if it works. By right, Windows 8 natively support Chinese filenames without the need to install East Asian language pack.

When I setup the Chinese Simplified Input, it downloaded a Microsoft Chinese dictionary for me.

微软拼音简捷2012流行词汇更新(KB2723161).. Anyway Windows 7/8 can natively read Chinese traditional and simplified characters

Yes, this patch file is needed if you install the default SimpleFast PinYin input. It's like Auto-suggestion for US English Keyboard.

Yes, Unicode filename is natively supported since Vista IIRC. However, if you use those mini chinese handwriting pad, they sometimes install some older Chinese input/display software which isn't 100% compatible with Windows thus causing a lot of character formatting issue.

I suspect this is the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Previously, I have disabled the Control Panel/Power Options/Change plan settings/Change advanced power settings/USB settings/USB selective suspend setting - disabled for the 'Balanced (Active)' option. I have also enabled 'USB Legacy' in BIOS.

Yesterday, I disabled the USB selective suspend settings for both the 'High Performance' and 'Power Saver' options, and my back USB ports is working from cold boot this morning.

I still need to monitor to see whether the problem recurs. Thanks for all the help.

Encountered file association problems with Winamp, MPC-HC and Irfanview (should be more).
I cannot associate file types to those programs via their settings, even when ran as admin.
Everything needs to be done at the Default Programs control panel.
----
Filenames with international characters display as squares, the characters display sometimes but sometimes its squares.
Win 7 was good with international filenames.

Some reference and a workaround:
Fix Japanese Text in Windows 8 (displaying squares)? - gdgt
Windows 7/8: Japanese font/kanji occasionally displaying as squares - Super User
----
Search doesn't search my indexed locations.

Checked the folder in "Indexing Options" and it doesn't search there.
Unchecked all the picture file types but it still show them in search results.
----
Win 8 really need to clean up all those small problems.
Waiting for new versions of software to fix Win 8 related problems.
Now is the period of change.

If this is the root cause, thank you very much for your update! It is a bug in Windows 8 Power Management behaviour.

This is a designed behaviour I think. It's a lot neater.

The Fontcache theory sounds plausible. Will research a bit if noone comes up with a permanent solution. Anyway, MS patching systems tonight.

If you've upgraded from Win7, you may need to Reindex everything. Or you need to clear some HDD space & defrag.

Yah, early adoptors are beta testers... ;)

Hi, I've just purchased the Win 8 upgrade with the offer and downloaded the files. The thing is that every time I try to install it, it restarts and end up the installation turns out to be unsuccessful already twice... despite having the minimum 20gb HDD... anyone can advise?

If MS decided to enforce it this way I hope there some API or something for app devs to tap on to link/relay their file association options to the "Default Programs" control panel.

Nope I didn't upgrade, its a clean install.
I did reindex before and all drives are defragged and have ample free space.
Anyway I started using Launchy as a workaround for now (and forever?)

Install a desktop PDF viewer like Adobe Reader.
Right-click PDF and go to "Open with" where you can choose default program.

1) For files you can just Right-click > Open with > Choose default program and choose the program you want to open a file with (remember to check the always use this program option)? Same as Windows 7.

2) Yeah I had the fontcache problem on Windows 7. Hasn't happened on 8 so far.

Any error messages? Which part of the installation process does it restart at?
