the router esr9850 has this "NGBN ready" ready, the tplink WR1043ND doesnt have, and is slightly more expensive...thus confusing...

whether have NGBN ready or not doesn't matter, most important thing is router must be gigabit and can support at least 300Mbps or above. You look at the product specs and compare between products and not solely focus on the NGBN ready label.

I have also subscribed to M1 100mbps plan, and unsure which modem to get.

I am not sure whether I need a dual band router or just a single band will do. I will mostly be just using an iPad, sometimes I may also have a PC on as well via wired connection. Worst case scenario, I may also have a notebook connected via wireless but this rarely happens. I don't game, maybe video viewing, yes but mostly just normal surfing.

Any specific suggestion for a router for my needs? I try not to spend more than necessary.
if you happy with your old 2wire box, use it as your router...$0, save the earth.

Juz an update.. I got off the phone with M1 CS regarding my home broadband contract.. I am on 100mbps fibre with contract ending 21st Dec.. Told her I wanted to upgrade to 200mbps fibre.. She said I can do early recontract, but because I claimed a laptop under the previous promotion (for the 100mbps fibre), I can only recontract upon expiry of my current contract.

As for the change of ONT, she mentioned I can bring down my white ONT and RG in exchange for the black ONT. According to her, bringing down the white ONT and RG is also considered as contract termination (in my case, expiry). [Note: I may not have rephrased that properly] In any case, I forgot to ask if there are charges involved, but since she did not say anything, I am assuming that it is free. [Note2: it is advisable to ask again on the spot]

This is just an update on my end, and until I have done it myself physically, it is difficult to confirm.

As I have mentioned previously, here is another update:

I dropped by M1 shop on 1st Dec (sat) after confirming with another customer service that I can recontract.. The shop confirmed that I can, even tho i am on premium contract (prev promo redeem laptop), as i am in my 23rd month.. for non-premium contracts, can recontract by 20th month.. so i proceeded to get the 200mbps plan and the $209 asus rt-n66u.. the change of ont will be done via an appointment which has yet to be set (waiting for their call), but i was informed that there will be a downtime of 7-10 days after the changeover of ont (can AhWise confirm this? so long?).. i plan to have this changeover just before i go overseas (to minimize disruption).. all in all, the process went smooth.. now juz wait to see how it is when the connection finally changed..

So, did the shop mentioned anything on termination cost for white ONT and installation charge for new Black ONT?
Thanks for posting this update BTW, I beiieve existing M1 users with White ONT are concerned about this ...
Downtime of 7~8 HOURS still acceptable but 7~8 DAYS? Meaning no internet for that period ?

From what I understand, the long delay is due to Opennet process.
They need to terminate the connection to NC, and patch to M1 Opco.

After that, M1 then can activate on their backend.

Can M1 arrange with Opennet to use TP port 2 for their own OpCo, then terminate the NC connection on TP port 1 once everything OK? This is what I called customer service if it can be done !

this was what i requested & pushed for... albeit with several hiccups, which were resolved eventually

priority for me was minimal downtime & to get eveything settled in 1 day instead of multiple appointments

quote of my experience:
0 downtime.

The CSO probably wasnt smart/flexible enough to offer u an alternative solution. Each TP is able to support 2 ONT of different sources.

What i did was to request for the black ONT under M1 to be installed on the 2nd terminal of my TP. Prior to signing the bundle deal, i informed M1 in advance of my intention to proceed with early termination + ONT collection of my old plan to be processed on the same date of my new installation, of which can only be obtained during the signing up of new plan. I've also told the CSO to place a note of this intention under my account so as to facilitate referrals & arrangements.

In short:
- Inform M1 of early termination to be processed on date x
- Sign bundle deal, obtain installation date
- update M1 on termination date
- on day x, NC collects White ONT from TP point 1, M1 installs Black ONT on TP point 2

yes, totally no internet at home..

ah yes.. i forgot to mention that.. as per AhWise's past post, there is a collection fee of $12.94 (i think) but installation fee is waived as per the bundle.. another note for those who are recontracting when on an existing premium contract, in the M1 system, i was told they will not be able to recontract automatically, as premium contracts require the user to complete 24 months, but they will fill up the paper contract for u to sign.. that is why they need to email the backend to call the user to set appt instead of the system automatically informing them.. i will update when i have more info..

Hi finalforce, my router is asus rt66u, dual band with 2.4 and 5 GHz. R u referring to setting the 5GHz ? I have done so with 2 diff ID. But can't detect 5GHz from my iPhone and laptop.

I meant getting a 5GHz wireless adapter. I'm using the Asus USB-N53.

Go to command prompt, type ipconfig and look under wireless. There is one that is default gateway. Type that ip into the browser.

some sharing of the WiFi setup by 1 of the bro in hwz:

For 802.11n performance you must use WPA2 AES security.

Note: Due to Wi-Fi certification considerations if you choose WEP, WPA or WPA2-TKIP encryption this device may operate in legacy wireless mode (802.11b/g). You may not get 802.11n performance as these forms of encryption are not supported by the 802.11n specification.
