Ater it is setup, of course it will run on its own. So what happens when one of the hard disk failed ? What do you do ? What happens if the diskspace are full, what do you do next ? There are some distro like FreeNAS that helps to make things easier, but I don't think you want to consider this even as straight forward as what you get from Synology DSM.
It's wrong to just look at the effort to build, look at the features, the flexibility and the operational ease. Then you will know it's not exactly easy to reach that kind of quality.
If you are an experience system admin or developer, I say you go with DIY since you already have the skill set and knowledge to administer one. But if you are new into such technologies, I believe you might want to be more prudent.
There is no point going cheap and risk your data. Once you start consolidating on an unstable platform, you are in for big trouble.
