my ex is from the media industry and according to her, rmit from sim and oklahoma city uni from mdis are the more recognised private comm degrees in the industry.

if u are looking at aust, rmit comm degrees are among the best in aust.

I am currently taking Communications and Media Studies at Murdoch University (SMF Institute).

From what I know, Murdoch University has a very reputable Journalism programme... in Australia. They have very good lecturers in their campus and lots of opportunities in Australia's media market. In Singapore, you will be getting the same certificate hence you need not worry about recognition in Australia. Your take away/quality of education is dependent on your lecturers.

I've heard that SIM's Oklahoma degree is US-based and not as popular as the Australian one in Singapore (something to do with different curriculum and focus.)

I have not heard anything about RMIT's communications programme.

Oklahoma is from mdis not SIM. SIM have 2 uni offering communication related degree. 1 from Buffalo, The State University of New York and another from RMIT.

Honestly doesnt matter which sch you go to. For communication paper doesn't matter. Most comms grad end up doing something else or if they are in related lines, their formal education in uni won't be much of a help. Most PR practitioner/professionals aren't comms grad, we have econs grad,arts grad,business grads in this field. So many comms students end up doing media (production) or journalism.

However if you want to do Journalism major in uni, i suggest you try to aim for NTU's if you can't then here's are some in singapore that you might consider taking.

1) Murdoch University @ SMf - Bachelor of Comms, Major in Journalism
2) Oklahoma City Uni @ Mdis - Bachelor of mass communications
3)University of Newcastle @ PSB - Bachelor of comms, Major in Journalism with PR

Avoid taking programs that does not offer you exposure to writing(journalistic) such as these
1) Uni Of Western Aus @ PSB - Bach of Arts ( Comms Studies)
2) Murdoch Uni @ Kaplan - Bach of comms , major in comms and media studies

Nonetheless all above unis are good for comms in general.

i did research on journalism courses in australia many years ago though i did not take up journalism eventually. murdoch uni is ok but believe me, charles sturt university (CSU) and RMIT journalism courses are widely considered to be the best in australia and are pet unis for employers in that sector. both unis offer solid practical training in journalism that employers favour and have great industry connections. read before that RMIT is stringent in its selection of journalism students, in a particular year, 1000 went for the entrance test, 150 gt shortlisted and only 50 gt selected. the journalism course is not offered in spore and i think unfortunately, the reputation of the uni is lower here as compared to in aust. having said that, most employers in aust are not so hyped up about where your degree comes from. a go8 cert is good to have, but any of the 30+ public unis stand gd chances too.

for private in sg, the oklahoma course offered in mdis used to be not bad but they did a revamp many years ago so i dunno about now.

this is just my opinion but i think for a comms degree, choose one that gives you adequate practical exposure and not one that emphasizes a grounding on theories. grounding on theories is no doubt necessary but not the most important imo. in the media/comms industry i heard, skills are valued and you have to learn fast and cannot afford to always trial-and-error. but most importantly, you have to enjoy your degree!

Depends on your interest.

Public relations is about managing an organisation's relationship with its stakeholders. Think towards press releases, event launches, advertising, etc. It's about maintaining a company's image and reputation. They are usually found in marketing/advertising departments although their job functions are different.

Journalism is on the other spectrum. You write for magazines, newspapers, radio stations, tv reporter, etc. PR people will want to make friends with you so that their stories get published.

Media studies is another ball game. It's more academic, looking at theories, trends and whatsnot. Other than policy making and academia, it is my opinion that media studies have no useful context in the private sector. Still, it is good to learn the theories behind what you're gonna do.

Murdoch University allows you to take double majors, hence that's what most students do. PR/Journalism is a very useful combination, allowing you to experience both sides of the fence as well as understand whats to be expected of you. PR/Comm studies is another popular combination, learning both practice and theory.

Sometimes it's possible to skip the foundation certificate and jump straight to diploma. My friends and I did that.

Like what the dude above said. Look for those programmes that offer you a lot of practical skill. Trust me taking Communication studies/Media studies is a waste of time. You learn things like policies, cultures and a whole plethora of theories which you won't even get to apply in real life.

If you seek practicality i believe journalism major will help you in your news writing skills. This is a more transferable skill and can apply across all communication discipline such as PR, Media and advertising if you are not into news/journalism.

I think you should research more on what those 3 types of comms sub-discipline i have mentioned and decide for yourself.

To be honest, taking communications degree is a risky move and if you just wanna take communication to 'upgrade' from your previous cert in order to earn a degree,it won't do you any good.

Upon graduation be prepared to be unemployed for a while,paid very little and face tough competitions from other grads. Be prepared to wiggle your way up to the top of the food chain.
