The purpose of this thread is to share with everyone your storage needs at home, how you organise and backup your data, as well as other relevant information when it comes to digital storage. It is not about what is the most ideal way of managing data (esp in a work envt) but is more of a day-to-day and realistic situation (e.g. money, time and effort) faced by different people on their own computers. Please feel free to share so that all of us can learn from one another. And simply "Like" this thread if you find it useful or insightful.

Mine is a simple one as follows:

C: 128GB Plextor M5Pro SSD for OS, scrape file and applications

D: 500GB WD black for work and personal data, photos, videos, mp3, software, and os backup images. (Actually this is partitioned from the 640GB drive. I have a 140GB hidden space which I haven't assigned, as it was previously used for OS, but recently upgraded to SSD.)

E: 500GB Seagate for games, movies and Korean dramas. (Using this drive for unimportant things because I simply don't trust Seagate. The firmware died once already.)

F: LG DVD writer

Others:
  • I have a spare LG DVD writer with lightscribe, but don't know how it can be used again since I am running out of power socket inside the PC casing unless I buy a splitter. Then again, I don't really need two drives. Quite wasted; sell also no value.
  • I have a Sony ext. 1 TB hdd for doing back up. I kind of regretted not buying WD My Book Live as a NAS so as to easily share files (even via internet) and do backup for multiple devices. But having said that, I suppose backup to NAS (even via gigabit network) is slower than USB3.0.
  • I have another 2 spare 40GB hdds, but haven't touched them for many years. I might just erase them and throw away if still cannot think of what to do with them. The space is small to be of good use, and I don't wish to plug them into my crowded PC casing. Buying a hdd docking is yet spending/wasting money.
  • My PC has no RAID at all since I have SSD for speed. As for redundancy backup, there is still a risk of frying the hdds altogether in a single system.
  • I only shared some video files in my home network. There is no public access via internet.
  • I also plan to use the Sony ext hdd to backup my wife's laptop. I regretted not buying a 2TB drive. Perhaps I might consider buying another 2TB ext hdd for myself and then give her the Sony 1TB ext hdd.

Backup Plan:
I'm currently using Acronis True Image to capture images of OS, which I store into D:, then I use Sony 1TB ext drive to backup everything in D: & E:. It is more of a differential backup but without having a few copies of it.

Acronis True Image will not proceed if you don't select delete partition in D: drive. Warning: doing will wipe clean your D: drive.

Mine's simple as well:

1 TB Hitach OS drive + applications + games
1 TB WD Black additional for games (Hitachi about to run out)
2x1 TB Samsung f3(?) running Raid0 for video recording and work stuff

1 NAS with 2 x 3 TB WD Greens for backup and backup of backup.

To backup stuff I simply copy and paste stuff from my computer into the NAS. For my website and related online stuff, my NAS grabs it automatically from the server to keep a copy.
