6-7 years ago, almost hooted the 802D until I realised my room is only 4x5m, so ended up with Focal 1027Be.....

Nowadays, Ak120 + TG!334 is good enough for me.... can bring my music almost everywhere

Actually that time I was eyeing for the Diva Utopia Be but the price is and too big for my room.

U will be surprise that the SR009 is better than a lot of system. As what I heard, u need at least spend a 6 figures to match that kind of sound. And if u don't have a good room, u can forget about the audio system because irregardless of how much u spend, u are not going to get a good sound.

One of the echolofters that time owned a 802D and a PassLab Class A Mono block amp. And he told me that the 802D will caused u to fragile and not meant for long listening.

He then upgrade his speaker to Sonus Faber TOTM [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]STRADIVARI[/FONT] and was very happy with it.

Anyway, was thinking of a DAP with earphones for occasional on-the-go usage and had been reading on the AK120 as I love the looks and size compared to its competition. Saw some of your pairings but any specific recommendations that I should listen to?

I know E1 and Jaben sell the AK120.. does Stereo have it as well? Good to be able to hear with different combinations before buying.

Not looking to spend much on it like what some of you guys have, just looking for a balanced sound that I can enjoy sometimes as I'll use the DAP quite seldom. If that can be obtained for $500, that would be great, but if you think <$500 earphones are crap, feel free to say so. Willing to consider high prices if there's an exceptional pairing.

Do not intend to use an amplifier with it.

Hi Quest, nice to see you here You may wish to consider the AK100 which is much cheaper since you are going to use it occasionally. I bought one recently and like you, I listen to headphones only when I am travelling. There is a good deal for AK100 and I will pm to you separately on this.

Hi Quest, right now have the UE Triple Fi 10. Will be looking for a better pair of headphones or IEMs. Any recommendations? My budget is not more than $500 and is for travelling. For home use, I have the HD800. My AK100 will only arrive next week. If you are interested, I can bring down to Adelphi for testing.

For headphones, I am considering Senn Amperior and Momentum Over Ear. My friend bought a Senn Amperior and he told me the Amperior is pretty good for the price. Let me know the result of your audition.

Ok I went to have a quick listen today to the AK120. There was no AK100 for me to listen to.

Just to be frank, I feel the player does offer more performance than an ipod but not a huge difference for the price.. I was rather underwhelmed. It's more dry and less lively sounding, and I actually preferred the ipod's sound by default as it was more engaging.

My gf said we probably need to find the right earphone for it so we asked for recommendations and tried a few such as FAD, Sennheiser, Shure, Westone but we still weren't convinced.. At this stage, I stopped listening to the AK120.

From the various tests, I wasn't sure I would be getting a AK120 but I thought I didn't mind buying the FAD Heaven VI as it sounded ok with both the ipod and AK120 although I felt the mids were abit colored and it's more on the gentle side.

Then this happened - someone next to me was trying out the Fitear 335 and I had a listen after she was done with it.

These earphones made the biggest difference I heard all day, and by a significant margin. The only negative is that as a custom, I can't share with the gf. I didn't get to hear the 334 (no stock) otherwise I might be very keen to consider buying them. Shop asked me to consider waiting for the Shure 846 to arrive to consider as well. It was too bad the shop had limited higher end earphones to test.

Based on what I heard today, rather than buying a $1.5k player with $500 earphones, I'd rather just invest the full $2-3k on the earphone. I can always pick up a player/amp later on if I wish.
