Hi folks,

Did a web order from Amazon for a pair of Sapienza loafers recently. Am wondering if it's just me or the leather quality and workmanship doesn't look up to par with the other shoes I've seen in AE boutique.

You could also see two slight bumps along the edge and the welt of the upper on this picture

Should I go through the hassle of returning it and hoping for a better pair to come along?

Do they have stock?
What's on amazon maybe what's left from factory seconds. Factory third... Lol

2 small bumps only u noticed, wear who can tell? A few knocks plus polishes change fast. Or u think of putting shoes on display

Have a few questions.
A) From my understanding, this is the steps to take care of leather shoes
1. Use saddle soap to clean (Is this really necessary? Can I just use a cloth to clean the dirt from the shoe?)

Brushing help, don't really need saddle soap to clean.
Dry up leather with cracks saddle soap can clean and nourish the leather.
Mink oil gives it more conditioning before polishing it again with wax.
I screw up trying leather bag conditioner on shoe it dry it up bad and saddle soap does wonders.

Cleaning with saddle soap is only needed when one mess up polishing with wax.

Huh I tot is the other way round, saddle soap will clean and strip all oil off the leather thus drying it. And conditioner is the restore leather to a supple state???

Never use mink oil on dress shoes, they leave a sticky residue and the leather will not take a polish anymore.

Mink oil is to be used on work boots as heavy duty waterproofing. Or on your pair of rainy day shoes.

I only use it on the soles of my dress shoes for protection against wet surfaces and wet tile skating.

The original question is from like 2012...

I heard mink oil will rot the stitching though, but considering almost every shoe maker uses nylon thread now, that point should be moot?

I tried saddle soap for stripping wax and oils etc, but I think the Saphir Renomat is much much better for taking off old layers of wax.
Of course, follow it up with a conditioner (but that is pretty routine anyway isn't it ?)

I don't see the bumps you are talking about, but it looks pretty normal to me.

I had returned a pair of AE shoes to Amazon before, but that is due to excessive bowing / flaring at the ankle area.
Amazon reimbursed me for all shipping costs, due to the defective goods.

If its any consolation, thats not a factory second, as AE will punch a round mark on the sole of the shoe if it is.

The sad part is I feel it's worse than factory seconds... :(

I wouldn't have minded the bumps if the leather's condition was better... Don't think they have stocks for my size anymore on their site... :s22:

anyone head to Ed Et Al new collection tmr?

Where is the venue? 55B Boat Quay or 5B Jalan Kilang?

I'm still eyeing the Primauté Collection, but it cost $600. Can use that money to get the better grade of Meermin instead.

The salesperson told me is $600. I hope I didn't heard wrongly...

I like this series because it uses better leather and has the fiddleback...

In truth, I will pay more for the leather. No one cares about the fiddleback.

My current pair of shoes uses that leather, and I have to say they are really very comfortable.

Creases very quickly though. :(

Hmm... The leather looks and feels very different (cheaper?) from the Macallisters and Park Avenues that I've handled before when I was in the AE's boutique.

Amazon shipped the shoes to me while I was in the States previously, any idea if they'll reimburse shipping now that I'm back in SG?

I thought you were trolling at first. The flaws you mentioned are so insignificant, I wouldn't even notice it at close proximity if you didn't mention. Wear the shoes once, and the bumps are gone. Topy them, and they are gone too.

Unless of course you want to display them in the house without wearing them. Seldom hear AE owners complaining about non-structural imperfections. I recommend you go bespoke or buy in the range of EG.

How would better grade Meermin compare to their Primaute range?

Rest assured I'm not trolling :s13: I guess they don't show up very well due to my lousy camera skill I guess...

Here's a highlight, I'm not sure how wearing the shoe will result in the bumps going away as it's more of a result of how the leather was stretched on the toe box?

Don't think try...
I tried on my belt it works great.. It cleans a little and it doesn't strip oil. Pure urban legend. It's not a real soap.

Mink oil not tried yet, let u know when I find out. Those saphir products contain mink oil so key is apply the right amount.

Which is why I said factory 3rd!!!
AE factory 2nd cannot sell due to more imperfections so go amazon, or those totally past season stocks.
