For example for metroethernet or leased line plans what you pay is what you get so you want a 100Mbps line you pay for it, simple as that. What that also means is that when you do a cost analysis the MR plan would be taken as 50Mbps plan rather than 1Gbps plan.

Again for Singtel, Starhub, VQ metroethernet or leased line plans there is no need to give CIR since you are effectively paying for full bandwidth. And the technology used like for leased line means you are using the whole line, 0 oversubscription since it's basically 1 to 1. Metroethernet is the new in thing as it allows better scalability and lower price but speed wise you can't really tell the difference.

CIR is really as a bandwidth measurement for frame relay networks which is typical of MPLS core based networks. Which again boils down to the fact that you can't use CIR to measure bandwidth or service level on leased line or metroethernet networks.

MR still doesnt support number porting yet right? Thats the only constraint thats preventing me from jumping over

MR dun support number porting is because the "others" dont wanna go into the arrangement with them.

Advice Needed!

Hi All,

I am a new member and currently quite new to the fibre industry.
I have signed up for the Ultra Plan and currently awaiting the confirmation call in February to install the necessary set up in my house.

I have chosen the AC68U router (supposedly to give the best speed). I know that there is a difference between being wired and wireless. As I am currently living in a old HDB (>30 years old), can anyone kindly advise what kind of preparation I can do beforehand to ensure I can have the fastest wired and wireless connection?

For wired: Is it possible to just connect some cable from the router to my laptop? (Heard of the CAT 6 cables etc from the other threads) Does the cable length matter since I may need like 10-15m to connect to my laptop?

For wireless: Given that there is a wall blocking the router, do I need like repeater or any other device? (I know wireless connection gets worse with each intermittent device so I am asking it if I have no other choices.)

I am currently using a Macbook Pro Late 2011 version with the wireless card as the following:

Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0xD6)
Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.22)
Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n

First of all, is the Terminal Point (TP) installed in your house?

Wired: A minimum of Cat 5e for Ethernet cable is alright. For cable length, speed will be very slightly affected after 100m or more (normally non existent or very minimal).

Wireless: It really depends on the house structure and best to test it first to see if you need a repeater or not.

Your MacBook Pro wireless card only support up to n mode which cannot fully utilize the ASUS AC68U router so it will still be connected on n mode instead of ac mode. As mentioned by other bros, be prepared a 60% drop of the wired speed on wireless which is a norm.

Yes. You can connect the wired cables directly Into your laptop.

your laptop will only enjoy up to 200-300mbps on wireless as it's a older version. Thus I would recommend wired.

For MR's digital voice service, does it only support certain phones or can I use my current dect phone?

Also does it require another device or it's integrated with the ont?

CIR is the Bandwidth has been "guarantied" under congested conditions, its twin, PIR is the max speed that can be used when there isn't a congested condition happening. Thus taking CIR value on its own is pretty pointless without the mentioning of its PIR value. CIR/PIR is a tool of bandwidth control and applies not only to Frame Relay but theses days to Ethernet Networks. It is also a much more primitive method than the more advance QoS mechanism we have today for example like the ones in Asus routers.

Using the yet to be launch MR 1GB as a reference, we assume its CIR is 50Mbps and given that it allows up to 1GB speed, we can safely assume its PIR is 1000Mbps. Comparing say VQ 200mbps plan which is in the same price range. Lets assume both their CIR and PIR is 200Mbps.

In scenario 1, assume link is extremely congested at the Line Card (this is the first stop where your fiber connection is terminated at the Op-Co end) where CIR/PIR is applied and no congestion on the ISP upstream (aka internet), MR 1Gbps plan would effectively behaves like a 50Mbps and VQ a 200Mbps.

In Scenario 2, assume link has little or no utilization at the Line Card (this is the first stop where your fiber connection is terminated at the Op-Co end) where CIR/PIR is applied and no congestion on the ISP upstream (aka internet), MR 1Gbps plan would effectively behaves like a 1000Mbps and VQ would be still 200Mbps.

Thus given an assumption that the network is congested for 25% of the time and a file download of a very huge size in PBytes was done over a 24Hrs period. At the end of this 24 hours,

So how congested MR network must be in-order for it to equal in VQ performance? You can do the maths yourself.

Of course will not allow u to do trunking. It actually depending on your room location from the router. If your room is near the router, you can wire directly to the router and put the flat Cat 6 cable under the room door so no trunking needed. This is how my father connect to his com in the study room.

So I can just go buy an Ethernet cable and connect to my router and enjoy the maximum speed right?

Yes, the TP is the rectangular box on your wall.

The router has a Cat 5e Ethernet cable provided. Unless you are getting a long cable (more than 1m).

Need to get one longer cable to connect from the router to my laptop in the room since the router will be in living room. Saw another thread to go SLT to buy. Thanks for your help. Really appreciate it :D

Measure the distance from your router to your laptop before you go down to get one.
