l'm using the regular singnet bb. Received a letter from singnet that says my building, a private apartment block, will receive fibre very soon and I should upgrade my plan to fibre, or I won't be able to use the internet.

I checked with opennet staff. They told me it is not necessary to upgrade to fibre. But whenI called singnet, they told me it is a *must* to upgrade because the fibre to be installed is not compatible with the copper cable currently running.

Anyone getting this upgrade-or-else letter? What options do I have if I don't sign up for fibre?

No such thing as force to upgrade. Read your letter carefully.

The letter said the internet service will be disrupted if I don't upgrade. On top of that I spoke with more than 1 singnet staff, who told me without doubt that I will not be able to continue with current plan if I don't upgrade to fibre.

when you mentioned singnet bb, you referring to ADSL? I don't really trust singnet staff as most of the time they just say things blindly without going into details, and they may not even be technically competent.
Don't really know whats the content of your letter but probably you should try email to Singnet and seek for clarification the relation between copper cable and fibre installation.
Having disruption during installation of fibre is possible and shouldn't last that long. (note, disruption doesn't mean you cannot use from then on). If you still think it's "upgrade-or-else" case, try writing to IDA and request for advise there.

1) Tell SingNet that you expect financial compensation of the remaining period that you will not be able to use their ADSL BB. They cancelling contract?

2) But before you do that, has your Management Corporation under the Strata Title decided to remove all telephone copper wires from the building? If yes, then cannot do (1) above.

3) Don't mind please post a photo shot of the letter so that fellow forumners do get correct info and do advise correctly.

Show us the letter?

From what I am aware, no one can force you to switch to any services because consumers have the rights to choose. In addition, there are people with existing contract, so its impossible to force people to change to fibre.

According to Singnet, there's an 'upgrade' from copper to fibre, and the current adsl will not supported anymore. This is only affecting all residential units in my block. #*!&^$

I've only heard of *new* apartments that will henceforth come only with fibre connection, no copper telephone wires - this has been approved by IDA. But never heard of a forced upgrade.

Please check with your condo management to see if the existing telephone infrastructure really is going to be disconnected. I'm assuming they may want to run the fibre lines through the old telephone routing so as to avoid laying ugly new trunking.

And in any case, please exercise your right as a consumer as you are not given an option in this matter. Get as much benefits / compensation as you can out of this.

Note also that while SingTel is obliged to continue providing telephone services to you (digital in this instance), you on the other hand are *not* obliged to use only SingTel's fibre broadband service via your new fibre line. Tell them your ADSL contract is being terminated beyond your control, so you should not be subject to any penalties. Then go ahead and subscribe to any fibre service you want!

I don't think any Management Corporation will do this. Phone copper will have to be removed before the fibre cable laid to the riser outside all units. Then unit owners have to book appointment individually with OpenNet to install TP. Months? Then ISP activate the TP port. Weeks?

So no, this is not possible. Instead fibre will be run without removing the copper.

Actually, I doubt this story of an "upgrade-or-else" letter. Of course if the photo shot of the letter is shown then I will be proven wrong and I will admit it.

Fibre and copper wires are separate issues. How can one install fibre points and remove the existing telephone points?

Forced too because of pricing. All other forms of broadband is priced higher for slower speeds. No freebies etc.

So little choice right.

Spoke with singnet staff a few times. I was told that they're doing it in batches. Eventually all who use adsl bb with singnet will be required to upgrade to fibre. I'm just one of the (un)lucky one being chosen. Frankly, the cs staff are friendly, but the info they tell me has inconsistencies. They don't let me talk to their sups or manager. What to do...?

Its true that they are phasing this out gradually. however, existing customers should not be affected. New BTO flats do not have analogue lines already for some projects. if your area is affected, i guess not only you are affected, the whole community is also affected. some of your neighbours will make more noise than you did, so just sit back and relax..
