Hi guys, recently got a Asus 290 Ref ( the 428 one ). Installed it and updated the drivers.

Version : 14.10.1006
I5-2500K @ 3.3
Kingston Rams 4x4GB 1333mhz
Intel ssd (forgot the model think its M3?)

This is where the problem is, on borderlands 2, I can go as low as 30 fps, when there is a lot of stuff going on, it may even drop to 15 fps!!!!

P.S im using MSI afterburner as i feel GPU tweak sucks.
I game on 2560x1440 max everything.

Am I being ambitious to expect better from this reference card?

I have seen reviews and it performed well. So if anyone can suggest reasons why my card is lackluster it would be great. THANKS!!!!!

Most probably you are limited by heat.

Check your fan profiles. If you are hitting 94 95deg during gaming you are needed to change the speed of the fans. Be prepared to hear a vacuum sound.

What are the temps? It might be throttling due to high temps.

my temps are around 89-91 when playing.

bro its louder than vacuum and worse thing is my chassis is right beside me. I set a more aggressive fan profile that scales up to 80% when temps are 95.

U turn on AA?

yes x16 AA.

Yes you are expecting too much from the card, especially when 16x AA requires a lot of GPU power.

1st mistake is the Ref card design. Loud fan.

2nd is x16 AA. This is too much for a 1440p display. A 1440p display need not have any AA turn on. It is so fine that with AA turn on you cannot see any difference.

Your 15fps rate could be the card has hit its heat output. You might need to cool it more by turning up the fan a notch higher.

I see, thanks guys! Dropping the AA to x2 or off give me average of 60 now, awesome. although it still lags when there is a lot of explosions going on. dips to around 20. Any ideas why now?

Big mistake sia r9 290 ASUS $428 promo

Cant do much with your ref card. You also cant go and buy a DCII cooler and slap onto it. Only way is to get 3rd party cooler frm Artic (but will void ur warranty) or go WaterCcooling or LLST and use.

Go for pricing is like that de...

yeah have to agree with you. lol. At least now i know i will never buy reference cards anymore.

Ok one more thing I realized, my temps are only 78?!!?! GPU usage spikes badly, from 100% to 60%. Is this what may be causing the lag? Shouldn't i be getting around 85C and above?

And is my CPU bottle necking? Gonna try on wolfenstein soon.

If you are using the CPU on your right then most probably you are being bottlenecked.
