Yeap I read about that on styleforum also. Mosts posts do state however that we should try to size half down if we can to get rid of heel slippage..

My current shoes are able to slip one finger in at the back heel area if I squeeze my toes all the way forward. Is that a good fit or too loose that may be contributing to the heel slippage?

I'm very new to dress shoes but are your current shoes worn in already? If they are, I'm not sure if that's normal. But if that's new and you can still fit in 1 finger while pushing your toes all the way forward (assuming your toes are still relatively comfortable), it would mean that the size is too big?

Just my 2 cents worth. Probably need experts like Alvin to share their thoughts on this.

Yes, styleforum is right that by going down a size by half may help prevent the heel slip. However it also depends on the last of the shoe that you have bought.

If you down size by half and it gets too tight or still that you're getting heel slips, it might be the last that does not fit to the shape of your feet.

Some last may be slim at the top while at the back it might be looser and thus causing the heel slip. Like loafers, it is good to down half a size to prevent heel slip as there are no buckles nor laces to tighten them.

So being just a tad bit tighter wouldnt be a problem and the leather will definitely expand after a couple of wears.

I thought I was a UK6.5 but it seems I might be a UK6. Its weird coz i usually buy US8 for other shoes/sneakers.

Anw I alr tried an insole but its still a bit loose. Everytime I walk the heels slide off a little :(

And if I wear them longer and the leather becomes seasoned, i think it'll become looser? So doubt I can salvage them. :( Thanks for ur help man!

Weird... Based on your size, you should be fine with 7UK. Even with RAIN last generous width, you should be fine with 1/2 size down. I am thinking could be the width is too wide or the instep too high for you.... Bear in mind when sizing down futher, the length of the shoe is shorten but the width remain unchanged. If that is the cause it might not help. It might even squeeze your pinky toe making it painful after prolonged wear....

Heel slippage happening probably when the heel area leather is still new and hasn't soften yet. When that happen, the heel area will curve in to conform to your heel. FYI, I did get heel slippage on my Meermin suede hiro but the more I wear them, the heel slippage become less noticeable at least for me....

Finally like what MasonAndSmith has mentioned, certain last might not be suitable for your feet. Always research well on each shoemaker last. Each of them has their own characteristic. Don't always listen to others recommendation. It helps, but end day it is still your feet and your money. Trust your instinct and gut.

Hope it helps.

I am no expert, just sharing my research and experience on buying shoe online. Yes it is tricky to try to get the correct size with different last but hey, that is where the fun part is and end day when you have gotten the correct size and the shoe is worn on your feet, it is damn rewarding....

Thanks dude for your help.

Yeah its true that sizing half down may not help, but I don't have the luxury of ordering another smaller pair unfortunately. :p

At any rate, I'm thinking if I can't off load it, I'll probably find some tongue pads for the shoes and try to make do with it.

Does anyone know where to get tongue pads anw? Guardian / Watsons? Or any cobblers will add a leather liner at the heel area to decrease the slippage?

Any suggestion for working shoes for daily wear? I walk a lot so I don't need expensive shoes, yet fashionable enough. I like Italian shoes not English type.

Check out Rockport shoes :D

I walk like 2 hours a day with them.
Mine is "Rockport Wooster"

hi guys, just got this brown working shoe.

2 things to check:

1) while walking, it is abit slippery especially on smooth tiles. how to remedy this?

2) what should i use to improve the shine of my shoe once it gets dull?

1. Get use to it. It improves after a few wears. Or bring it to a cobbler to fix a topy or vibram.

2. Use a wax to shine it. Watch youtube videos on technique.

After walking for a long while, the leather will get its grip after awhile, however not a pure guarantee that it will be still grippy on smooth tiles.

You can use many waxes brands from Kiwi, Saphir and Boot Black. Youtube does show a couple of videos on how to achieve various shines.

Was recommended Saphir shoes care / shine product. Easy to use. But make sure u know your shoes leather well. Different product on different types of leather.

Alvin, care to share a review of your Vass and Carmina shoes after some feet time?

It's a pity u got the carmina in suede.. was hoping for a like-for-like comparison between the 2 brands mentioned since they are roughly in the same price bracket.

Vass is touted as the 'cheapest' handmade shoes around while Carmina has the reputation for handgrade quality at a 'value' price (strictly in the realm of dress shoes enthusiasts or rich people, SGD600-800 is no value price by any other standards).

I have many nice branded shoes, just added vibram soles to a pair. Upper half cost $18
Is this reasonable? I have many more which frankly I don't wear often. I'm wondering if there are cheaper alternatives or cobblers doing vibram soles. I have another 5 to 6 pairs to do

Why would you trust your nice branded shoes to a cheap by the road side cobbler?

Their skills may be good but the tools they have may not be up to par.

Charles Tyrwhitt clearence. Made in UK shoes, goodyear-welted.

Sale from Charles Tyrwhitt, Jermyn Street, London

Anyone has any experience with the shoe sizes for Charles Tyrwhitt? I'm wearing a size 41 for Edetal.

I'm interested to find out how much does each additional size or half size adds to the length and width of the shoes. And also how much does the G-fit adds to the width.

CT shoes that are ''made in england" are typically by Loake. 41 for edetal should be around UK7.5 or UK8. G fit can be rather wide if your feet are normal width.

Thanks for your reply. According to their website EU41 is actually a size 7. But I found that too small when I got my shoes this afternoon. The oxford was an extremely tight squeeze to the point where it was uncomfortable while I'm unable to even put on the semi-brogue. Not sure why really since they are identical in dimensions side by side. :s11:

They seem to be similar in width to the edetal but are roughly 2cm shorter in length. I'm trying to decide how much bigger in size should I exchange them for in this case.

Oh.. u ALREADY BOUGHT the shoes.. and 2 pairs at that..

Width of shoes cannot really be judged by looking at it.. and the type of shoes matter too. Closed lacing shoes like oxfords would be less accomodating width-wise compared to derby or monks. Also how 'high cut' the shoes are at the instep. 6-eyelet vs 5-eyelet can sometimes make a big difference in fitting your foot into the shoe.

It would be difficult to advise on going up just 0.5 or a full size for the oxfords. You gotta make a judgment call but a full size is probably safer. I would definitely return the brogues and not even try for an exchange but that's just me.

Good luck!

Fair advice. They aren't even that much cheaper tbh. I should just get a refund and save the hassle.
