So…I had received a PM to do another review, this time on my Panerai. Sure, but I would not like to bore everyone else so I will keep it brief.

Truth be told, I’ve never been a big fan of this brand. My good friend has the Pam 347 and he wears it almost daily, I’m usually like “how’s chunky doing?”

Well, before Italy gave us Officine Paneari…all I new was Monica Bellucci (can you believe she’s about 50 now!)

Anyway, being an inquisitive person due to my job (occupational hazard), I went to do some reading on the brand. Definitely blessed with good heritage from their beginnings in Florence around 1860 and now owned by the Richemont Group. They were also used by the Royal Italian Navy commandoes during the second world war.

One noticeable aspect is the limited number of watches produced by them and the limited edition models. They don’t make many every year. Before I make everyone go to sleep, here is a good place to read more up - Panerai Catalogue 2012

Here is the humble review of my PAM 00000, from the “Q” series out of 2,000 pieces. The Series reference just denotes production and type of watch. Year of manufacture basically.

I compared this to the 112 before making my purchase. Both are very clean and simple dials. This model has the extra official logo on the face – “OP”



This model is using a Luminor case style. The diameter is an amazing 44 mm and on a polished 316L steel bezel (very beautiful high polish I would like to reiterate – scratching it would be torture). Rolex uses 904L. What’s the difference (enough debate thicker than the bible available everywhere if you like to follow that story). It is important to note that the lever protecting the crown is in brushed steel. The back is fully covered up too with stainless steel 'Officine Panerai' engraving and Series batch.

On the dial are simple hour and minute hands. No seconds, no date. Arabic numerals mark the 3,6,9 and 12 o’clock positions. There are other models should you seek these functions / complications. It is covered by a dome sapphire crystal.

The dial uses a “painted” application versus a “sandwich”. In layman terms, the luminous material is applied that is on top of the dial vs two different layers on a sandwich. On top of the layer which has the luminova that glows in the dark, another matte finished dial is placed on top, akin a sandwich. Experts, do correct me if I’m wrong please.

Legibility is great on this watch. Can’t get any better than this.




The movement is a mechanical hand-wound Panerai OP I. I don’t think it is COSC certified. Modified from the ETA 6497. Quite reliable with a power reserve of 56 hours. I usually wind it every morning though. Do remember to unbuckle the lever before you wind!



Here you can see the thickness (no funny jokes!!) It is about 17-18mm



Trying to show the painted dial, but it’s better if you put a sandwich dial by its side to comprehend what I’m trying to compare actually.

During the unboxing, there are two straps. A leather one with steel buckle and a second strap which is rubbery. Screwdriver included (better than my Tudor, extra strap but no tool to change!)






I think it would be fair to say, one of the main allure of Panerai is actually the straps. Many people appreciate what is on the after market either by their variety or material. Panerai officially also has a host of these accessories from calf to alligator but going outside is like entering the galaxy, limitless options.

On the default calf strap, I have to admit I am a little disappointed. It doesn’t seem very high grade and give me impression it wears out easily. The buckle is also beautifully high polished.

This part of the novelty works against me as I’m not really a strap person, unless you’re talking about Wacoal, Victoria Secrets or Triumph International straps. Seriously.

Well, that said, I haven’t had access to many straps (I worry what I will google in my idle time now)

In summary, Panerai has many nice models. This Panerai, is one of the cheapest. Panerai is said to be phasing out entry level Luminors and replacing them with the in-house P5000 movement (8 days power reserve) – for example the 560 is the equivalent of the 112 other than the movement, everything is the same.






I think whether you have a big or small wrist doesn’t matter, the watch would look nice on you. Many ladies wear Panerais too. No hard and fast rules but I prefer to don it on a more casual set-up. As I shared with my buddies, Panerais although big in size their persona is very subtle and not ostentatious compared to the other big brands (my opinion anyway). It is a beautiful watch to have nonetheless. It is as versatile as a Submariner.

As I said, I did not start as a fan…at a dinner once, a friend let me put it on. Bad mistake…after dinner I asked if he wanted to change it with my Submariner! The appreciation of their history also swung a small sentiment vote for me.

I couldn’t get one at the boutique in ION Orchard, I got this off an Authorised Dealer for about SGD6,400

Anyone who likes to add on or share any further please do! Hope it was not so boring.

i think if you have a pam with sandwich dial, your review will be better since you can compare n contrast between the 2..
