What? Why would amazon JP do this. Imagine buying a cellular tablet with sealed sim slot but with restricted usage... Sure, you could say future 3g usage is free. Maybe the sim in Japan set are not from and don't have worldwide services.

I didnt even know its only locked to japan network!! E book reader.. locked to network.. Laugh die me!!

Another reason why japan set are cheaper...

Because it's just meant for the domestic market. The region lock is pretty strong so one needs to be in Japan to buy books anyway. This takes away the need for the 3G to have worldwide coverage.

I meant the U.S. set used ATT sim, typo there. Didn't know the kindle designs were localized to such extend, must have been a logistic nightmare. In fact, I just read a blog stating US kindle 3 (that is right) used ATT while UK kindles used Vodafone sim, one has 3G coverage for the whole of Vietnam while the other has none, interesting.

Anyway, the fact that Amazon 3G coverage maps get quoted online only recently meant it's not an issue, like Jeff said, people buy from their authorized local retailers.

I guess for us, since it's not sold here, need to be extra careful with future Amazon products...

It's not so bad. Japan is really an exception because the Japanese sets are SO cheap compared to the US sets. That's probably why Amazon US does not provide support for Japanese sets; they don't want a lot of parallel imports to happen.

Don't worry, if you are not in a rush to get one, wait for 2 weeks or so, you should be able to get one at around that price in the forum marketplace. Amazon sold at a real awesome promotional price, I'm sure many bought extras to resell.

Which is actually good, no inconvenience of having to do the import yourself. Even better, (maybe) there'll be a couple hundreds of new users this coming month! The more the merrier, let Amazon notice us.

That's not exactly a good thing lol. Lying low may be better... I've got yet another customer who just got 'discovered' recently...

=:p Better in the long run no? Dense little country, they can experiment with their same-day delivery, Amazon local/fresh, etc. Guess what i meant was to have them officially enter into Singapore's online retailer market, even if it means it is just a partnership like how Amazon.cn is. If i remember correcty, our Singpost has one of the better delivery network in Asia.

I don't think it's amazon who doesn't want to do business here. (Who doesn't?!) Something must be preventing them from entering the ebook market... 'follow the money' is how I think about this !

However, we have some very good things that other countries don't, the free local shipping for e.g.

i hand carried back my kindle voyage wifi version from Japan. I side load my books anyway so no need for a 3g version. In fact wifi is off most of the time now.

got it delivered to the hotel in kitakyushu airport.

Actually come to think of it my version is non ads but there were the cheaper ad sets at yodobashi and bic camera in hakata, kyoto, shinsaibashi and umeda in osaka.

However at the stores there were no accessories like screen protectors and origami covers so it wasn't so bad that I ordered from amazon jp itself.

Paid 271.59 SGD (23,480 yen) for the kindle non ads version of voyage.

Paid 56.76 SGD (4,860 yen) for the purple leather origami cover

Paid $19.23 SGD (1,710 yen) for two pieces of Buffalo Antiglare Kindle voyage protector.

I used my ocbc frank card so i hope i get the interest counted in for spending on the card for the ocbc 360 account from amazon japan.

Total is 347.58 SGD for everything in.

Since you've the cover, no need to compromise screen clarity by using the screen protector. :)

actually i kinda feel the screen protector doesn't impede the clarity too much, plus i feel safer with it on in case i fall asleep with the cover open and somehow the kindle voyage lands on the floor while i sleep or my kid niece does something with it.

I saw taobao selling glass screen protectors for kindle voyage though. wonder if those are better. I ordered glass screen protectors for my phone and tablet but the side effect of that means I keep wiping my phone and tablet with microfibre cloth more cause I simply cannot tolerate my fingerprints which will mean the kindle voyage under that glass sp will have those too.

You can actually use the Voyage without any screen protectors (if your concern is oily screen.) It doesn't happen; just try it without screen protectors for a week to test it out.

The 'kids' angle is valid though. I got a customer whose kid stabbed the screen on the first day with a key, thus denting it.
