Hi, I need help with choosing between these 2 courses. i'm interested in both fields of studies, but I can't get enough information about NTU's Materials Science and Engineering online, eg. graduate base pay, job prospects in Singapore Etc. I have heard that the competitiveness in this course is not as high as other courses such as Electrical Engineering, but i would like to know what's the competition like in Computer Engineering? The news reported today that the base pay of graduates in Computer Engineering is around 3.4k, while for NTU MSE course the base pay is not listed. And i feel that MSE's research areas are wider than that of Computer Engineering, so maybe the variety of jobs that i can get employed in is wider(??)
I'm confused.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

The median salary and employment rate is here. Note that median salary is not equal to base pay. Median salary is the median of the entire cohort, so you could say its a second lower honours.

MSE has a lower employment rate than comp engine. But MSE does have more research opportunities because its a pretty wide field. But employment wise, not many can really beat the IT industry. If research is where you want to head to then MSE is the way to go. But salary for research is pretty low, unless you discover and patent something really groundbreaking.

Can elaborate more?

I am from Computer Science

Is it not that difficult, however I think of changing course or even quit school. my standard is not good enough for NTU

cos the environment is a bit too fast paced for me, and it is like more rewarding for those "elite", if you are those average or below average student, your life will only get harder, when u reach year 2 or year 3, ytou might feel that you dun have interest in computing anymore

I have interest in programming and computer, but not this kind of "computing", it is a bit too chim for :s22:

I dk how to explain to you here

in short, if you are those zai kia or programming pro, it will be a heaven for you, cos u will enjoy coding and ADVANCE MATH for you, and the MATH is like SUPER CHIM that kind.

If you are those want to just smoke your way through the 4 years and want to just get a normal degree, you might have a very hard time. This course is not for people who want a "easy life"

If you open house, they wun tell u the hard-truth one la:s13:

Hmm true, but if there was a breakthrough in eg. Quantum computing in years to come would my computer engineering degree still be relevant? Since all that I've studied would be " not up to date"

at the end of the day, local graduate are nothing but tools and equipment, when we out lived our usefulness we will be tossed away like a apple pie, and the companies will get a younger and smarter and more dynamic IT personal to replace us. trust me, they wun even think twice

At the end of the day, it is all about the business.

I want to prevent people from walking a trap!!!!
i choose a relative electives mostly in CSE in school of EE.

i can share that, there is alot of commitment. i had to work extra hard as i was the only "odd" one out who chose this path for relative electives where all my classmates of school of EE / power major choose to go electronic path or megatronics path. in that sense i was the only one person who in with the group of CSE or CEC students.

coding has to be a passion of urs. if not cfm cannot pass cannot survive, i may not be good in raw coding, 0 knowledge w linux ware, but i have the interest hence the prof mark me lenient compare to the rest of the class. that being said, it is an alien world, only undying passion can get u to the end of the race.

the rest of the engineering degrees out there do not share the same "problem" as CSE

its ur future not mine :s13:

i edy been thru ur path twice. first poly, next uni. now i am enroute to post grad studies.

pls go and ask everyone in CSE and CE grads, see how many can tell u they love to do programming becos of it gives them a job or they can do it becos they simply loved how the codes run. those who say the former, wun last 5 years in the industry before looking for float before drowning. after 5 years, one is about 30 years old, complete career path switch at this age is easy not easy, hard not hard.

Actually, following your passion in SG, sadly, is like that. It's either you have enough passion to keep you afloat (amid low pay, low prestige, no recognition etc etc), or you just break down and go for a career change and/or continue with whatever you're doing feeling depressed. End of the day, no passion, just study business lol. Work in a bank, be a corporate junkie, have the girls etc etc, look satki... :s13:
