Hamsters are nocturnal; gerbils are sporadically active through the full day. Hamsters are actually solitary; gerbils are social animals.

i used to keep a pair. highly active, capable of chewing anything so make sure u keep them in good enclosure. they are also capable of jumping pretty high, so must cover ur enclosure well.

i suggest keep them in a tank, instead of cage.

kept a pair before

they have no problems with singapore's weather and like to run around - be sure to let them out of their tank whenever possible - keep them in glass tanks and not wire cages, they can chew through almost anything

they have to grind their teeth regularly, be sure to give them chewing blocks or wood

you cant pamper them too much with the food, if given a choice, these little buggers will always go for the sunflower seeds - if you don't watch out for this, they will become obese which can then affect their health

at old age, they suffer from a number of ailments.. be prepared to take them to a vet that is trained in small rodents

one of mine had problems with his teeth and couldn't eat - we had to bring him to the vet once a month to clip away his top teeth or it cuts into his lower lips

another one had a tumour on its scent gland.. the last few months was terrible seeing this fella deteriorate

Kept 1 baby gerbil. Jumped down from the table, died of heart attack. Like a kangaroo mouse.
