Hi all,

My car is more than 7 years old now. I'm starting to look out for a new ride, cos my wife needs one for her job. I've been looking at the below options, and I'm hoping to get some advice on them, but I'm still open to other suggestions.

Honda Vezel - Wife loves this, but I'm not very keen, primarily I'm not a SUV fan.

VW Golf - test drove this yesterday and I love the power and acceleration. The car is very well-balanced. Main concern is the problematic gearbox (nothing new).

Mercedes A180 - didn't get to test drive this. I love the look of this. Interior and features are a bit dated though. Main concern is the price. Not too keen to pay that kind of price for a car.

any thoughts?

It depends on what you two actually need. If fuel consumption is the major concern, then Vezel should be a good choice.

we are quite comfortable with 12-13 km/l, something my car is current achieving now.

I think all 3 cars can achieve that, no?

A180 dated? its interior is rather sporty no? with the airplane vents and steering wheel. best looking car of the 3. add in the sunroof and AMG kit, it looks stunning.

Yes, the airplane vents and steering wheel are stunning. But the middle panel is full of buttons, unlike some of the newer Jap models with touchscreens. I'm fine with that, just that some basic functions like keyless entry and dual climate aircon etc are not there as well, which is why I feel it's a little dated in terms of features.

oh... i thought all new golf cars come with the 7-speed DSG?

Or are you referring to resale cars?

those can be added.. just need to top up :s22:

all things considered, in terms of reliability, MB trumps VW any day.

Honda Vezel

Pros
1) Car meant for her and you drive only on weekend
2) Most Spacious
3) Cheapest among the 3 shortlisted cars - you are paying for the car
4) Readily available and affordable spare parts - Anyway Honda is quite reputable in terms of reliability
5) Stop the nagging :s13:

Cons
1) Parallel import
2) Face value
3) Mediocre cabin noise isolation
4) Compact SUV -> not your preference

yeah, i reckon i'll get a lot of nagging if she doesn't get a car she likes.

What even you do, dont buy the Very Worry VW brand. Till today, the 7 speed gear box problem is not completely fixed.

woah.. it's been a few years and they haven't fixed it?

The sales guy told me yesterday they had already fixed it after replacing some of the parts that were not suitable for Asia climate. Seems like a hoax now..

For the Vezel, I would think that the biggest worry is buying from a parallel importer? They are quite well known for many 'patterns' after you sign on the bottom line?

My bro just got his Vezel from PI. Imagine, he got his COE in Jan this year and only got his car last month !!!

Yesterday was at Kah Motor showroom, was told by the sales guy that Honda new HR-V is actual Vezel (ie like Honda FIT vs JAZZ).

Yeah, HRV is the equivalent of Vezel, but with a more outdated engine. SOHC vs DOHC i think. The horsepower is also lower.

And of course, the price is a major difference.
