Actually for West side since 2nd July for the past 5 days, the 24-hr PM2.5 has been over the WHO recommended level (25 ug/m3).

It's like the start of 2014 in Sep. Diff is that it's beginning of July now.

Compared to 2014, yea, earlier start and end probably later due to effect of El Nino delaying the NE monsoon.

Faint hazy smell up north. Can sense a tad blur blur for objects >500m away.

Tropical cyclone activity may boost El Niño

Issued on 7 July 2015 | Product Code IDCKGEWW00

The 2015 El Niño is likely to strengthen in the coming weeks, largely due to recent tropical cyclone activity. Several tropical cyclones, including a rare July cyclone in the southern hemisphere, have resulted in a strong reversal of trade winds near the equator. This is likely to increase temperatures below the surface of the tropical Pacific Ocean, which may in turn raise sea surface temperatures further in the coming months.

All international climate models surveyed by the Bureau of Meteorology suggest El Niño will persist until at least the end of 2015. Models also indicate that further warming is likely. Historically, El Niño reaches peak strength during late spring or early summer.

El Niño is typically associated with below-average winter and spring rainfall over eastern Australia and above-average daytime temperatures over the southern half of the country during the second half of the year. However, the strength of El Niño does not always determine the strength of its effect on Australia's climate. Read more about how El Niño might affect Australia.

Many other factors, such as the state of the Indian Ocean, also influence Australia's climate. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently neutral. Of the five international models that provide IOD outlooks, three suggest a positive IOD is likely during the southern hemisphere spring. A positive IOD is typically associated with reduced winter and spring rainfall over parts of southern and central Australia.

http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/jakartas-cloud-seeding-efforts-run-into-snags

The Indonesian authorities have tamed a growing number of forest fires in neighbouring Sumatra in the past few weeks with cloud-seeding, although the operations to produce rain have not been as successful as hoped, a top official has told The Straits Times.

As the dry season takes hold, the authorities in Indonesia and its neighbours are worried about a spike in forest fires and burning off on agricultural lands. Adding to concerns, a strengthening El Nino weather pattern, which usually causes higher temperatures and drought in the region, could prime parts of Sumatra and Borneo for major blazes in coming weeks. This could overwhelm fire-fighting efforts and trigger a choking smoke haze.

The authorities began cloud-seeding on June 22 in Riau province opposite Singapore, but a lack of clouds and moisture in the air meant on some days there were no clouds to seed, said Dr Heru Widodo, head of the weather-modification team at the Indonesian agency for the assessment and application of technology.

"But it is not that the cloud-seeding wasn't effective, only the success rate was lower than that in March. Had we not done anything, there would have been so much haze now," he told The Straits Times. A dry spell in March caused a brief surge in fires. (+1 for the smoke effort)

He rated the current cloud-seeding operations at seven points on a scale of one to 10, adding that the team had flown 11 flights so far and used more than 20 tonnes of cloud- seeding chemicals.

The number of fire hot spots in Sumatra jumped late last month to about 150, then quickly fell before jumping back to nearly 140 late last week, according to Meteorological Service Singapore, citing satellite data. By yesterday, the number of hot spots fell to 18 from 56 on Sunday, going by the latest map posted.

Despite recent storms, fires have kept cropping up, Dr Heru said.

Fires have also been flaring up in Jambi province and further south.

"We have received reports of rising hot-spot activity in the southern part of Sumatra. We will set up a cloud-seeding operations base in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Wednesday," he said.

Since coming to office, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has pledged to be more active in fighting fires. Jakarta last September ratified the 2002 Asean Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution.

Under the agreement, countries have to cooperate in taking measures to prevent, monitor and mitigate the haze by controlling the sources of fires, in exchanging information and technology, and in helping one another manage outbreaks.

When asked last night about forest fires in Sumatra and the ongoing challenges faced by cloud-seeding operations, President Joko said "we will have the report tomorrow", in response to a question from The Straits Times during a breaking-of-fast event with reporters.

So they are going to seed S Sumatra. You will be able to see the direct efforts here at the FFMC. If it turns from red to blue or green, that means rain has recently fell.

FFMC (moisture content of top layer)

More importantly is the DC/Drought Code. This represents moisture levels of underground peat. Give it 2 more weeks to warm up......

29 Sep 2014. Notice only S sumatra kena. In Oct it spreaded farther up towards Jambi.

Heh heh....you know your setup, condition and needs best lah. Just plan accordingly.

I'll just switch on the 3rd aircon FCU if I need more cooling power due to deteriorating conditions, or cycle the aircon FCU around if the haze/heat sticks around for days over the weekend.

Since day 1 5 yrs ago, my units are all maintained properly incld the ext compressor, no blockage of any sort for the compressor, condenser, fan or drainage pipe etc.

Actually if ac is heavily used every day and night, then is it best to get them serviced every 6 mths? Or more frequent than that is better?

If it's used like 7pm to 8AM daily and the fan is spinning (13hrs - mine is like that for MBR, does matter what temp the thermo is set at), every 3 months max recommended for rooms without air purification during such hazy periods (got PM10 and coarser particles also).

With good air purification, max is maybe 12 months or even longer.
Coz also got initial 30 mins or so during AC operation in which the air is not cleaned enough. I DIY clean mine every 1-2 months even with air purification, my FCU is always very near to 100% efficient vs brand new.

Shine a flashlight into the fan and see if there are any shiat there.

Solution : Just learn to DIY service with those water based flosser ba, very fast and the savings (both from aircon serviceman and electrical efficiency boost due to better cooling) are well worth it. Even without aircon foam, the water flosser gets 90% of the shiat. The aircon cleaning foam does impart a good clean smell to the fan/fins, I love that also. :)

Spray at the metal fins and also the fan. Won't spoil. Use 2-3 basins and 2-3 rags to catch the water. Apply common sense on how to use those basins/rags. Every FCU is just 30 mins max. Done deal.

6 months is too long. 3 months would be ideal.

Simply put, it's like your normal bladed Panasonic/KDK/SONA/Morries fan.

Seriously, 1 month can already start to see the shiat there liao. As far as AC cooling ability (BTU/hr), there is already a hit in efficiency, be it inverter or non-inverter.

I am sure every sinkie male is able to get bladed fans 99.9% clean, as long as they have been through NS. :)

Besides, calling aircon svc man to come, book apt, is sometimes a PITA coz they rubberband timing or they just miss the appt. So do learn to DIY....with just a water flosser and no aircon foam it's still really worth it, trust me on this.

Amazon not shipping the Panasonic oral irrigator liao, but locally still can get from BEST....Taka. S$65. Use for aircon and also flossing your teeth.

Can really see the hot weather affecting the bill.

Taobao LED (OEM and Philips, E14/E27/2G11 base PLC, PLL base, T5, G3 base), mainly cold water baths but toddler and kid use slightly warm water. (Daytime over at my mum's place)
Normal loaded fridge. 2 rooms aircon, non-inverter. MBR usually set 24 deg for first hour, 25 deg C after that and when it hits 2AM or so go toilet break, 27 deg C. 13hrs daily, 18hrs weekend. Normal room usually set 27.5 deg C every every night 10hrs.

Panasonic LED TV 42 inch in MBR, usually 2-3hrs weeknites, and 12hrs weekends, so yeah that's a wee bit of heat loading for the aircon to work on. Weekends 50-inch plasma TV electrical guzzler for 8hrs at least living room. MIL likes to switch on the plasma and waste elec while doing housechores or viewing TW drama on her ipad (?!!??!!)

2 adults, 2 children. MIL comes over to stay from Fri nite to Sunday early morning.

That's why Air Purifier thread also got Aircon cleaning tips and El Nino info. Is all related. :s22::s13:

PS. Today will be the 7th day/1-week mark in which West side is > the WHO recommended daily 24-hr limit. Those @ West pls take note. South and North areas also take note, very close to that limit of 25 ug/m3 24-hr figure.

Those who are pregnant, elderly > 65 years old, infants/toddlers, children up to 6 years old, folks with COPD/asthma/rhinitis/bronchitis/pneumonia/sore throat/cardiac or stroke issues, just came out of major operation, pls take note.
Those who are elderly or very young and have had major op or medical issues listed above, pls take serious note.

Ah ok I see.

Got any good water flosser brand to recommend?
