Haha, who knows, it may end up like so-called "steve mcqueen" rolex explorer II - din sell well in its 1st run, but is a hot collector's item now.

Watch collecting can be strange... what's unpopular now can be popular later.

Movement wise, the new Pelagos may edge out the old because it is "in-house", but the ETA2824-2 (a workhorse of microbrands - at least until Swatch group eventually limits them to their own housebrands) of the old means it can be serviced competently by independents.

And if you like royal blue, then Pelagos 2.0 is it.

Dial wise, I much prefer Pelagos 1.0 as the dial is cleaner (5 liner of the new? I mean, c'mon...!) and there's a lume pip at 3 o'clock.

Didn't notice the lume pip until you've mentioned! Future watch maybe? hahaha:s13:

Was at Bencoolen to check out a couple of Seiko watches, mainly to check out the prices. One of them, the Seiko 5 SNK series turn out to be too small, so I'm considering the SNZG series instead.

The other watch, the shrouded monster SRP641 turns out to be smaller than I initially thought, and in fact is roughly the same size as my G Shock Mudman. In fact, it was perfect when I tried it on my wrist. All shops seem to be quoting me the same price, which was more expensive than what I found online, so I left empty-handed.

Saw the new baby tunas too, but as they looks too big for me, and is also more expensive, so luckily, wasn't too poisoned lol. Will hoot one day but maybe not this year.

On a sidenote, I've been trying to research up on micro brands and realized that alot of them have models in the 4 digits. Just a question to ask you guys, are you willing to pay 4 digits for a micro brand, especially when you can get a big brand watch for that price?

A lot of the under 4 digits too!
Few in 5 digits!

Really depends on what u looking at

Or u can go with Russian chrono for half price of a 7750.
Movement looks great too

Ahh, very nice. Thanks.

Are we overpaying just for watches to have a Made in S**** ?

Alternatives from Russia, China and Japan are able to offer so much more for a lot less.

Those from China seem a bit on the rough though (with regards to attention to detail)

When reports says when Swiss makes 90% of profits selling mechanicals and mech only make up 10% of the entire watch production hmm...

Chinese watches not only no attention to details but QC is weak. Something that small if one could careless about 5% error on one part, tolerance stack up done?

Endured hellish traffic jam to johor..
Freaking 3 and half hours between 2nd link bridge to Malaysia customs...
Saw a few cars breakdown making the jam worst.
Pple peeing at the roadside
Entire afternoon burnt.

Reached johor outlets at 6pm plus and straight to the watch shop.
Snagged this aqua terra, no fancy mechanical movement.

For those interested.
Auto stainless steel versions going for 17K plus MYR before 10%off.
( Co-axial 8500 movement),

I dont have alot alot of monies, i have some but really dont want to spend too much, want to save for stormy days yet look atas. Been thinking alot on the rolex sub these days, almost on my mind drooling over the hulk but the thought of the $11k... scared.

Is tudor atas enough? Or a 2nd class version of rolex? Initially thought of tag aquaracer but some bro said topup abit get a tudor.
How ah?

If you get the atas watch you may feel pressure to get the 'buddy buddy' accessories to go with it. designer clothes, shoes, etc. Dinner dates at atas places anyone?

A good rule of thumb I use is if I have to think about it (as in will affect my finances) then it's not for me.

That being said, if you are really very keen just buy whatever YOU like as long as you can afford it comfortably la.

Tudor is perfectly fine, it's just that brand recognition is less the Rolex. Only WIS will understand the difference between watch movements and appreciate what is INSIDE the watch more than the etched letters of the brand.

For example, if you put the exact same ETA movement into both a Tudor and Rolex, the Rolex will retail for a lot more.

Rolex spends tons of money on brand promotion and marketing so the consumer ends up paying for it. In terms of level of atas-ness, it's only considered very average in the eyes of serious collectors.

If you are serious about atas, go AP or PP. Lange is not bad too but not swiss.

Lastly, the most important part which many new watch buyers forget is the servicing. Oh boy, the servicing is so costly! You're looking in the range of hundreds of dollars every few years!

Watch gurus here. I have finally bought my first Automatic watch, and I am bugged by this constant losing/gaining of seconds, or my watch stopping to work entirely just because I left it there for tens of hours... now I finally understand why some people actually wear watches at home. Because I usually do not wear my watch and just look at wall clock at home.

I understand that mechanical/automatic watches can never be as accurate as Quartz watches. Well most of the time I actually wear digital watches, and I enjoy being accurate to the second. With my automatic, from the morning to afternoon, I realise it is already like 3 to 4 seconds slower than my other Quartz watch. The maintenance and constant winding, setting of time, seems a little troublesome to me.

To most of you who have like more than 10 watches, don't you find that having to keep setting the time... a little troublesome, especially if you rotate the watches? I guess most of you here are more concerned over the design, aesthetics, whether matching with what you wear, the movement, smooth turning of the crown, able to last generations because it's purely mechanical, and ATAS feel (e.g. owning a Rolex), etc. instead of time accuracy (well this is in Fashion section anyway).

Okay, hope you all don't mind some 2-cents from a watch noob :)

Bro radiancez567, welcome to the maddening world of watches! :s22:

You're in good company! ;)

If accuracy is what you want, an automatic/mechanical watch is NOT for you because electronic/quartz watches - or your handphone for that matter - own auto/mech watches in the accuracy dept. :s7:

Watch nerds appreciate & admire auto/mech watch for what they represent: a wonderful, beautifully, intricately designed & crafted mechanical device that fits within an inch diameter, which represents a living thing like us that has a heartbeat so long as we move it with our body motion or handwinding - that happens to tell time relatively accurately. Oh, and sweep second hand. :)

And the male-gadget mind does not mind fiddling about with them to restore their accuracy, and some derive therapy from that. =:p

The way to wrap your head around this is to treat a watch as men's jewelry! Not convinced? Rolex terms itself a jeweler. :s13:

Some solutions the your list of problems are:

1. Invest in watch winders.

2. Buy time only watches so you can save yourself the trouble of re-setting the date.

3. Re-set and handwind the sucker each time your want to wear it.

4. Don't even bother to reset! Want to know the time? Eh, that's what the handphone is for, okay! :D

Seriously, ALS > PP. Their gorgeously decorated movements literally occupy almost the entire case diameter edge-to-edge which you can admire from their display casebacks! Something PP simply cannot compare. :s12:

Laurent Farrier and Roger Smith would like to defer :s22:. Not always is everything about "atas-ness" nor the need to flaunt.

Rolex's control and dedication to their entire manufacturing process is nothing short of magnificent, to the extent of having their own in-house foundry to control the quality and purity of the metals utilised. Such an incredible feat, possibly enough to render one speechless once the immense magnitude and intricacy of the supply chain is realised. IMO only second to Seiko's legendary effort to R&D and produce the movement lub in-house!

Alas, what was once first and foremost a professional tool has now become a rather "gauche" piece of jewellery given consumer sentiment.

Also to ask:

I'm looking to get a couple of seiko later, thinking that Bencoolen might be a good place to start. Any particular shops in there that Bros here will recommend? Or any shop that you will recommend that is not in Bencoolen? Thanks all!

True but more Asian enjoy flaunting than Ang mo.
Rolex understand Asian DNA to do so. Dude just stating the majority not the minority or in fact few who can afford smith's work
Bottom line Rolex and smith works on different principles and their audience different.

To some it's still a tool but in the eyes of most ppl just a jewelry.

Im not comparing Rolex to Smith. Apples to oranges that one if its ever made lol.

Was saying that Rolex is def not "average only" for watch ppl. Even people like Smith and Farrier hold Rolex to a very very high esteem. Far above any competitor in its price bracket.

Hahaha yes, I'm mainly looking at those 3 digits ones :D Next on my list is a Steinhart.

Usually microbrands do not well in stores but direct
Steinhart may have moved away from micro

When I think micro I think mk2, guinand , Uhr or kemmner
