Singtel New handset Upgrade Program - Mobile SwopUP

Singtel introduced a new handset upgrade program called Mobile SwopUP, it's similar to the Mobile Swop program introduced last year, except that this allows handset upgrade every year with no early re-contract fee.

"We are very happy to announce our new handset upgrade program called Mobile SwopUP! You can now upgrade to a new phone every year, and save on an early re-contract fee worth $350. Simple trade in your phone for a brand new one the next time you re-contract. And if anything happens to your phone during the 12 months, we got you covered with up to 2 Swops or 1 Replacement plus 4GB Store & Share. Available at only $8/mth with iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s sign-up from any Singtel Shop."

So basically we have to pay $8 monthly insurance and if we damage our iPhone it'll cost $181 to replace it, and if we misplace our iPhone it'll cost $532 to replace it. Plus, we get to upgrade our handset yearly.

What do you guys think of this new Mobile SwopUP program? Do you think after trading in the old iPhone we still have to pay for the new iPhones, or do you think we'll receive a new iPhone yearly for free by trading in our existing iPhone? If we still have to pay for a new iPhone yearly then it's not worth it because a 1 year old used iPhone can fetch easily $500-600+ on the forums.

Telco trade ins are horribly priced.

6+ maybe around $700-800 on forums or shops. Singtel will gladly offer you $200-350 for it. You can bet your last penny on it you will be paying more and losing value on your trade in.

Yup I know telcos trade in prices always suck, thats why I always resell my used iPhones on forums that can fetch about $600++ for a used 1 year 64GB iPhone.

I am wondering if this means we can upgrade our iPhone by trading in our existing one for a brand new one for FREE. If it's free then it seems quite attractive

Not worth it
Apple phones can hold value v well, even used ones
Can sell a used iphone 6 for around 650, after paying the 350 penalties, can still pocket 300. So this mobileswopUP is basically for those too lazy and dont want the hassle and just want a new phone every year. But basically, they dont get to keep or sell their old phone as it has to be traded in to singtel. So the vicious cycle continues.

Its like leasing a car vs bying a car.

Only mentioned that the early recontract fees are waived off, but did not state whether we need to pay additional fees for the iPhone (probably iPhone 7 next year) that we are upgrading to based on the plan we subscribed.


If we sell the iphone to 2nd hand shop, we can fetch better value of the phones to subsidise the early recontract fees as well as the additional ones we need to pay.

This mobileswop has been running for about a year already. Wanted to ask if anybody has experience with their replacement programme? You just pay about $550 and get a replacement phone, right? Does anyone know if the old device can still work as normal or will Singtel block it?

I asked them yesterday.

Apparently you have to use the same phone which you bought with the mobileswop plan and is applicable to iPhone only.

And the iPhone is there to cover the cost of the early waiver fee of 350. And then you got to shell out another 500 for the new iPhone 7

seems to have somewhat similar concept as apple iphone upgrade program.

think there is no plan that allow you to free upgrade to a new phone without paying. like that telco and phone company no business do ...

this plan shld be useful for ppl who upgrade phone every year.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar here, so maybe I'm asking a stupid question. What would being reported as stolen mean? Do they block the phone? What if it's being used with M1 or Starhub?

Got a fren who used to work at asurion thr 3rd party coy.

Ausrion will report ur first phone imei to police and say it is stolen. And singtel.will block that imei from joining the network. This is to prevent abuse.

I'm sure Singtel/the insurance agency have done their homework and have their methods to block it, find out or do whatever.

Insurance fraud does exist though, but this isn't the venue for such a discussion

im already enjoying yearly upgrade coz im on mio bundle, does that mean its not as useful? i find that iphone seldom hv prob one leh, cracked screen is a more likely prob and even if u get it replaced outside its only gonna cost abt $120.

Here we face a few problems:

1. Availability of stock. They will allocate the stocks to other plans hence really screwed assuming if we were to sign up then realize no stock. Lol!

2. Resale value sucks. I feel it is ok to pay $100-150 more as trade in to reduce the hassle. Unfortunately, they will dock more than that

3. Confirm another marketing gimmick to improve their P&L. Lol!
