Thanks bro, house power is ok, but if I make the move to use a NAS, I wanna play safe and prevent data loss, if ups is only 70-80, then I think it's v worth it and gives me peace of mind.

How much would it be then to get the 4 bay, 2Tb raid 5 set up?
Depending what nas you want.

One last question: why Synology instead of others? How does wd cloud drive fare against Synology?

Well, you may look at others like Asustor or Qnap for comparison.

Wd, seagate, dlink and etc nas solutions are inferior in terms of apps.

The nas can act like a mini server to host multiple stuffs. The 3 main players, Synology, Asustor and Qnap has rich apps solution to turn your NAS into almost anything you want it to

Previously wd or seagate nas the reason i shun due to low read/write speed. Now they have improved to be similar.

I can't really find faults with it except the ease of usability. Imo.

Honestly, i am looking at either ASUSTOR or Qnap due to the HDMI port which Synology lacks. I need my NAS to serve as a HTPC too.

Asustor is the closest in term of price vs Synology. QNAP is way much more expensive.

Yes, looking at asustor as-6404T but... but the ds918+ is way much cheaper for similar specs.

is it sufficient to just get a 418 rather than the 418play or 918+?

DS418 $496

Toshiba 4x 2TB 7200rpm at $78 x 4 = $312 @Tradepac

Total: $808.00

This is exactly my existing NAS setup.

.
You should replace them with either Toshiba or HGST HDD and offload the Red Devil at Garages Sales.

Mine is LG 55UF850T....
Mine is LG too.

let me share my experience with you on the pros and cons for video streaming

LG TV
  • pros: used VideoStation (Plex previously) it works fine for most videos
  • pros: external subs for video works fine (.srt)
  • cons: some video codecs, it will simply quit the entire video near the ending (10-15mins left)
  • cons: some videos (embedded subs that you could toggle on/off) cannot load, yr video will have no subs
  • cons: loading of video is alittle slow.
  • cons: 4K takes awhile to load (maybe because my nas is old)
  • cons: not all videos could play - same for Plex - in fact, Plex is worst.
  • cons: unable to load imdb info from videostation

If your TV could use WebOS3.0 and above, maybe you will have better luck. Mine is on 2.0 cannot upgrade.

On Samsung TV
  • pros: hell, everything works fine because you could have DSVideo app download and playback the content with it.
  • pros: imdb info loads perfectly together with the video
  • cons: https will not load for any subs. In other words, you have to allow http

hope it helps.

You can do that with the nas. You don't need an overpriced apple crap tv to do it.

Any cheap android box could do that. In that case just save money buy cheapo nas.

The whole idea of a nas is to serve it's purpose as a htpc without incurring additional cost. Imo
