Do I need to use a cross over cable for file transfer? What type of speed will I obtain?

Is it possible to use male to male transfer?

Simi male to male? Your cable definitely male on both ends.

If you machine/pc is 1Gbps and nas is 1Gbps, you will get the full 1Gbps (+/- overheads n etc)

Let your usage determine the choice of NAS.
Use mainly for photo / media / video / tools storage and also streaming videos..
The difference of this 2 is about $100 so not so whether to spend abit more on the 918+ *dilemma..

That is why I moved away from 2-bay NAS.

But you can try to configure it as Raid-0 + connect to an external HD as backup.
Bro.. ex HDD as backup, do I need to always leave the HDD plug into the USB all the time? Can I just plug the HDD in whenever I plan to do the backing up only...
