Hi all,

New to NAS and would like to seek some advice.

My main objective is to backup data using 3.5' HDD and not looking at portable HDD (e.g. WD passport drive). I will connect this backup device to my desktop. I understand NAS is akin personal cloud storage server so it may not be that relevant to me and I could opt for case to house the HDD instead. However, a multiple bay HDD case with Raid feature seem pretty exp, so I am considering NAS to have the added feature.

A few questions. I noted that Synology has this "4K H.265 video transcoding" feature. Should I get this? Also, if my main concern is to transfer the file (i.e. i wont need to access the file thru wireless) to my desktop / tablet / mobile at home using wifi, which NAS should I get from Synology? Looking at 2 bay or 4 bay.

Thanks

External HDD: direct connect to desktop/laptop via USB port
NAS: connect to router

Whether or not you need 4K H.265 video transcoding, that depends on how you playback on your devices

As for NAS access, Lan or WiFi once it is connected to router.

As for 2 or 4 bays, that depend on your budget and capacity requirement.

2-Bay: SHR or RAID1, 50% of HDD capacity
4-Bay: SHR or RAID5, N-1 HDD capacity
where N is the number of HDD of same capacity.

Thanks. I wont be playing video file frm the NAS but my concern is the file transfer speed. If so i can get NAS without the 4k transcoding feature? My router to desktop is by LAN. Other device will be by WiFi but i wont mind tsf between NAS and mobile devices using desktop as a media. Haha...

This is going to sound stupid. Can I connect to the NAS using usb instead of thru router?

Can, in that case you probably shouldn't get a NAS. Why consider NAS when you don't need the "N"?

Get either the value or + series for Synology NAS.

J series is entry level, slower in writing speed.

My office DS1815+ was affected. Synology approved RMA and extended warranty for 1 more year because of the bug.

Malaysia office DS1515+ also encounter same bug, RMA approved by Synology.

Both cases the old units were shipped back to Taiwan, new units shipped back in return. took about a month for the entire RMA process.
i think all DS415+, DS1515+ DS1815+, DS2415+, RS815(RP)+, and RS2416(RP)+ will be extended by 1yr.

when i contacted synology support, they told me my unit got 4yrs warranty and that link above was given to my. Have also confirmed with EA and they told me its covered with 4 years warranty.

Yeap.... i just did an RMA with EA too....
Did not opt for Advance RMA as it cost too much to ship the unit back myself....

Have you try mapping by IP Address to your DS418? This is the case with my company laptop. Home machines all can map by name except the company laptop.

BTW, I am using DS418 too, with 4x Toshiba 2TB 7200rpm HDD.

Yes, I tried mapping it via local network address but I forgot what error was it. Now laptop is not with me atm.

The IP address should be the local network address for the NAS right?
