Hi I'm new to NAS. Currently im trying to set up a office network for file sharing for a new company but unsure what hardware to get. I mention to my partner to get cloud solution for file based sharing.

From his sales view, the data are sensitive. I know that we could use encryption software to encrypt files before uploading to the cloud.

Firstly.

Need to get
1. Nas storage server like synology.
2. Hdd. Ssd. Nvme for cache, i read somewhere in this forum
3. Switch
4. Router
5. Cabling works for cat6 in the office to link multiple computers thru ethernet lan cable

Am i missing anymore hardware to take advantage for file sharing editing accessing. Its just purely office work like word.doc powerpoint excel. Pdf file etc

Budget around 2-4k would be sufficient to set up ?
Read the bros here are getting synology.

I also read that now nas can go to cloud as well access from home. But the intention here is data sensitive. We have holdbacks in putting in the cloud. Wants a closed network yet able to access the files from home but at the same time protecting our data.

Thanks for helping out.

Hi I have a DS1812+ with 2 DX513 configured with 8 disks and 10 disks as 2 clusters.
My DS1812+ konked out, so I replaced it with 1819+. Only when I hooked up the 2 DX513 I realized that this expansion unit is not supported. I am wondering if it is possible to get a DS2419 to house the 10 disk cluster instead?

On the same note, I have a DS713+ with another DX513 (2 disk cluster and 5 disk cluster)which also konked out. (I know.... seem they all seem to fail at the same time, but it has been a few years.) Can I put the entire 7 disks into a 1819+?

You probably need a firewall to protect your internal network from hackers as well. And you will need an internet connection subscription to connect your network to the internet.
4k for the entire setup is a little low.
If you are a local startup, perhaps there are some grants from government you can apply for.

https://www.patnotebook.com/physical...510-to-ds1813/

This seems to indicate it can be done. If your volume is just made up of all 5 disks in DX513 and not mixed with disks in DS713+, then likely doable.

But if your volume is cross-NAS/DX, eg in the case of your 1812+2x513s, then quite risky I think. Can try lah but it's really do at your own risk lor...

On a separate note, who else here uses their 4-8 bay NAS at home in non-A/C rooms? How do you keep the HDDs' temperature down ah? Change the original NAS's fan or are there other cooling measures to consider?

On & off, the HDD temps hit > 55 degs in my room when they're under load. Sighz...

Your NAS are way too old, and never think of refresh them before being konked?

If I were you I would go for Google cloud for business. Save you the hassle.

Well u never state the TB/hdd capacity required.

2-4K is doable though. However if you have specifications layed out it will be easier to suggest and understand if your budget fits because if i start recommeding u (i.e) high end cisco switch which you dont need u would have easily burst your budget.

And no, u dont need to waste money on NVME nor SSD for a NAS. Unless you really need it for unknown reasons. File storage+business, nah

I migrated my disks from DX513 to DS918+ no issues. However, your mileage might vary

Cos when it hits >55deg, there's a sensor warning. And not ideal to be that high all the time mah...

Usually hits this temp when they're scrubbing or doing anti-virus scanning.

Where you placed the NAS? Some put their NASes in display units that simply no ventilation!

On the top of an open bookshelf so it's ventilated, and it's placed 10cm away from the wall so there's no blockage on the fans. This is against an inner wall so there's no direct sunlight but the room gets afternoon sun, so the ambient temp is warmer than usual.

HDD warnings usually happen when it's doing anti-virus scans or data scrubbing cos these processes run for a long time...
