In 2017, its pretty hard to find an ultrabook holding modular components. So that's definitely something to consider for longer replacement cycles. Its a huge plus for repairability.

That's the exact opposite direction (while not many left) of what Apple laptops are headed towards.

Spoiler!

Oh forgot to highlight a minor thing about hp/lenovo. The WWAN/WLAN slots are usually whitelisted so it only accepts lenovo "branded" versions of an oem part. Though replacing wlan card is usually not someone would do.

Btw the 12 7270 has a WWAN card slot where you can add built in 3G/4G capability like a decent pro laptop would by getting an additional sim card..

Get Dell Inspiron sua.

$699 cheap cheap and comes with discrete graphics amd not too heavu. Best of all, upgrade warranty directly at booth and no whitelisting whatsoever.

Inspiron is good bang for buck and should be easy to upgrade to SSD.

My friend should be getting a HP Omen 15, probably the best value for a laptop with 1050 Ti and a surprising 512gb pcie SSD

What you're mostly paying for in pro laptops:
-TPM
-Longer driver support (new os)
-Long availability replacement component overstock
-WWAN expansion
-International warranty
-Slightly shorter boot especially iGPU ones
-Some have charge ics that can set custom battery threholds
-High WHr batteries
-The docking ecosystem
-Legacy ports (like vga)
-Build

Then again how many of these you need is another factor. But the primary justification is battery and you want a long replacement cycle, support and you don't want to keep changing hardware imo.

For moi atm upgrade is a want not a need, and despite being a 2012 laptop with a 35W TDP chip I'm managing an average of 5-7 hr on a 72WHr battery with WLAN is quite good liao..
