[Review] AMD Radeon VII review: Finally, a high-end card from AMD

The AMD Radeon VII is the first enthusiast-grade card from AMD in quite a while. But how does it compare against NVIDIA's best?

RATINGS
  • Performance : 7.5
  • Features : 8
  • Value : 7.5

THE GOOD
  • 16GB of HBM2 memory is great for bandwidth-limiting scenarios
  • Competitive gaming performance, especially at 4K
  • New 7nm process

THE BAD
  • Runs hot and is very noisy
  • Reliability concerns - didn't complete our stress test routine
  • High power consumption
  • No new architecture or features
  • Much of the cost goes towards the 16GB of HBM2 memory

Terrible card for the price point it's aiming at, multiple game benchmarks show it sitting at the low end between the 2070 and 2080 rtx. At 699usd launch, just a little more and you could very well be getting the 2080 rtx instead.

Disappointing

It only seem to help the RTX 2080 shine a bit better.

Performance is about 8 to 9% behind RTX 2080 and less power efficient.

For pure gaming, RTX 2080 is the better choice.

For gaming + content creation etc, Radeon VII has the edge. At least, AMD is still relevant in the mid/high-end market.

I don't care about US price, what matters to me is what the LOCAL price is gonna be....if it's crazy like 1.4k SGD, then we've got a loser! IF it's gonna be retailing at 1k SGD mark, can consider.

Don't need to look far, just look at past pricing for cards of this bracket. Not forgetting it's a card that uses hbm2 memory

In other words, wait long long

Edit: I'm expecting the pricing to be upwards of 1.1k when it hits our shores

It's not a card for everyone for sure. If you are thinking of using it purely for gaming, then you should look elsewhere. As usual the performance of this card is very inconsistent as oppose to Nvidia. The performance swing to widely from game to game. I wonder if its a driver issue or the GPU's spec is poorly balanced/tuned. But as pointed out by some reviews, the 64 ROP is starting to limit the performance when MSAA is used.
