[Review/Walkthrough] Asus X570 Crosshair VIII Formula, is it really worth it?

Introduction

The Crosshair Formula brings me back memories when i first looked at Asus AMD AM3 platform. That was the Crosshair V Formula. The very first Crosshair Formula board that i've seen (I might be wrong if there were more AMD Crosshair Formula before the Crosshair Formula V). Boasting beastly specs & great features.

All the features DNA that was found in the older Crosshair Formula V has been transplanted over to this Crosshair Formula VIII and improved further. Which imo, it came a LONG way.

Lets unbox!

Unboxing

Ah! A dent at the top right box. But nevertheless everything inside still works perfectly fine. Cause this box alone is FREAKING heavy. It has all the protection the board ever needs.

Accessories

Now comes the sad part. For S$862, the included accessories is very underwhelming. I have no idea what happened to the bundled accessories department, cause i remembered very clearly and joyfully when i unboxed the bigger brother X399 Zenith Extreme.

For this board, it comes with....

- 1* Addressable RGB extension cable
- 1* RGB extension cable
- 3* Straight SATA cable
- 3* Straight and 90deg Angle SATA cable
- 1* Wifi Antenna
- 1* Q-Connector
- 1* set of m.2 screws and standoffs

The rest of it are pamphlets, 'Thank You' card, stickers, coasters, user guide, a DVD Drivers disc and lastly the 20% Cablemod coupon.

Walkthrough

Lets do the board walkthrough. Now aesthetic wise, Asus adopted a monochrome design. This is something that differs from the older Crosshair Formula boards. They departed from black and red theme to an all gunmetal grey finishing. This will give a very much stealthy look and also a much more neutral colour to those trying to do an RGB build out of it.

Lets start from the top left corner of the board. This board uses 1*8pin and 1*4pin CPU power. This is essentially enough for any Ryzen CPU up to date. Including the upcoming 3950X that will be launching soon. Those with smaller PSU such as 500w to 650w with 1*8pin CPU power, i'm glad to tell you, you could boot this board with that 1*8pin CPU power. Cause technically speaking, you don't really need the extra 1*4pin.

Asus x EK

Came back the waterblock for the VRM segment. Now the Crosshair Formula has this EK waterblock attached for the VRM called the Crosschill EK III. With 2*G1/4" port, this allow water cooling enthusiast to water cool the VRM section. This is nothing new, but this a great welcome feature for custom water cooling enthusiast. It is mainly made of Copper but without any fins. So this will also be a downside for people whom do not intend to do custom water cooling. It can be pretty warm, but not alarmingly hot. But nevertheless this is expected for a hybrid Air/Water type of block.

There is 4*4pin PWM fan headers. The first labelled as 'CPU OPT', the second is 'CPU Fan' and the third is for AIO Pump. The last one was not labelled, but a quick check is a normal 4pin PWM fan header. If you are wondering what is 'CPU OPT'?, it is actually another header to follow the same RPM speed as 'CPU Fan'.

Now it's 2019, RGB headers everywhere. You have 1*Addressable RGB header and 1*RGB header at the top right corner of the board. Both are supported by Asus Aura.

At the side, there is your ON/OFF & Reset button. The shroud is a nice addition to indicate clearly on what are the buttons for.

Asus called it the FlexKey. At default, the FlexKey functions as a system reset button, but it can also be easily set to quickly turn Aura lighting on or off, activate Safe Boot or enter the BIOS.*

And it is also a Debug LED just below the 24pin motherboard power. This allow users to quickly note on what are the issues during boot failure. Although there is a OLED display to display for debugging code, but nevertheless this is one good feature for people to one glance and probably know what's the issue.

There is also a USB 3.2 USB Type C front header. Great to have as there are a few cases that appears to have the USB type C front.

Further down, there is a total of 8 SATA ports. Which imo at this era, i would trade for lesser SATA ports and more m.2 ports instead. Beside it is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 front header and another 4pin PWM fan header labelled as 'CHA FAN'.

More for custom water cooling enthusiast

Now comes the water cooling sensor segment, there is a water in/out segment. Which is great for sensing flow rate and a clever placement of Pump 4pin header.

At the bottom right corner, the first is the Asus Node Connector, this is actually to connect to other Asus product devices and able to control or monitor a few functions. (I have yet to try this Asus Node) so don't quote me on this. Next to it is 2*USB 2.0 front headers supporting up to 4 USB 2.0.

Wrong placement of CMOS battery?

Next would be the biggest gripe i have with this board. The CMOS battery is definitely not at the ideal location. Coming in as a custom water cooling enthusiast, this board will have a hard time swapping out the CMOS battery especially with cases that supports bottom radiators that could potentially blocks the access of the CMOS battery. Although one could say that how often does the CMOS battery goes flat? You will never know, and this is one poor placement that can hinder a user to change the CMOS battery if it goes flat.

Next to it is another USB3.1 Gen 1 front header and beside it is the front chassis header.

Audio

As for Audio, It comes with the ROG SupremeFX 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC S1220 and a nice ESS ES9023P amp.

Other headers:

- Audio Front header
- 4pin PWM 'CHA Fan' header
- 'Safe Boot' button
- 'Retry' button
- Addressable RGB header
- RGB header
- Slow mode dip switch

Power Delivery

Now let's look at the VRM section. There is a total of 16 phases. 14+2 IR3555 PowIRstages by International Rectifiers. Capable of 60A per phase, it is definitely more than enough even for the upcoming 3950x.

M.2 Slots

This is where i find it lacking in a high end board like this. The Crosshair Formula comes with only two m.2 slots. Which i find it inadequate for a high end users. Although i know that it is easy to ask for more m.2 slots, but i couldn't find any more spacing at the board area. But how i wish there are at least 3 or more m.2 slots which would be perfect. Or what happened to the DIMM.2 which can house another 2 more m.2 SSD? But nevertheless, both m.2 slots operates at full speed PCIE 4.0 specs.

The one thing i like is the m.2 heatsink is really easy to remove. Kudos to Asus for creating an easy access for the m.2 drives. Another plus side is the screws doesn't fall off when removing the heatsink.

Another 4pin PWM Fan header labelled 'CHA Fan'

Does it come with a case badge (besides the stickers)?

Also, am I the only one who noticed that the Formula is way cheaper in Singapore considering that the MSRP is USD699?

I'd noticed that too, which was why it and the X570 Aorus Xtreme were on the top of my X570 mobo to buy list. I'd even gotten the Xtreme at a lower than US$699 price locally. The Godlike is just crazy price wise.

Wait... They watercool the VRM (which doesn't need it) and yet could not take advantage to heatpipe/passively cool the chipset, so they still have a fan???

Sadly no. lol At least if they gave a ROG insignia case badge, i happy lol.

But yeah you are right. SG priced this board cheaper than outside, but priced the Hero more ex than outside. I have no idea.

Perhaps they want SG peeps whom are more spending power to buy the top of the line instead?

Godlike will be a category of its own imo. Together with the Asrock aqua. They are like the upper tier league kind.

This board i think in terms of price wise locally, it is directly fighting with the MSI Creation, with no other brands fighting this spot.

They have heatsink at the chipset. But my guess is the fan is just there for show. Cause the fan never turn on leh. May be when there is a stress test for m.2 nvme?

Chances are it's similar to MSI fans, only kicks in when temperatures get to a certain level.

Still a valid point though. I think Buildzoid made the same comment as well.

I found the case badge. It is together with the disc driver.
