Exclamation News | Unauthorized Microsoft software on platform like Lazada, Shoppee (Windows/Office cheap keys)

Note: Stick to the thread.

To those who think buying those cheap keys, this news will be
bad for you.

E-commerce sites Shopee and Lazada have removed dozens of listings selling unauthorised Microsoft software on their platform for as low as $10.

The listings, which were removed by yesterday, offered so-called "lifetime subscriptions" with product keys at prices lower than those of official retailers.

The Straits Times understands that the product keys peddled by these online sellers were copies for the education sector and other corporate subscriptions.

On its official website, Microsoft offers a personal subscription for its Microsoft 365 software pack for $108 a year. This includes popular programs like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

A Microsoft spokesman told ST last Thursday that it neither sells "lifetime" subscriptions nor product keys by themselves.

"Microsoft does not authorise any platform to sell counterfeit or infringing Microsoft software. We work closely with the platforms to try to protect customers from unwittingly acquiring counterfeit or unlicensed software, and participate in their marketplace monitoring," said the spokesman.

"We advocate for the platforms to enforce their terms of use in taking action against resellers who are engaging in the sale of counterfeit Microsoft software."

Checks by ST found that upon payment, the sellers of the unauthorised software would send a product key to the customer via e-mail or the chat function of the e-commerce platform.

But there were also cases which were likely to be e-commerce scams as some customers said they did not receive their product keys despite their attempts to contact the sellers.

Both Lazada and Shopee have procedures to resolve the failure of retailers to deliver on goods through refunds. The two sites also insisted they have a robust system to remove counterfeit products.

When ST shared with Shopee screenshots of the listings before they were removed, a spokesman said its listing team conducts regular checks to deal with unauthorised and counterfeit products.

"Counterfeit products breach our platform's regulations and we encourage all users looking to purchase branded products to do so from Shopee's official brand stores, such as the Microsoft Authorised Official Store via Shopee Mall, and from other authorised sellers on our platform," said the spokesman.

Lazada has a "zero-tolerance" policy on counterfeit and unauthorised items and works closely with its partners to protect the intellectual property of brands, said its spokesman.

"Sellers who infringe our marketplace regulations face escalating penalties, including account suspension or termination.

"We have promptly removed the suspect listings and terminated the errant sellers' accounts," he added.

Those who wonder why such seller can sell as low as $10 basically
those license are from schools or corporate.

Legit copies of Microsoft usually will come with Certificate of Authenticity

If the seller doesn't provide you either than a email or invoice indicating the purchase than the key isn't legit.
For those using such cheap keys, not sure how you be affected but
given past what MS have done for previous Windows version like Win 7
and etc.

For Windows/Office either it will be lock especially if you are using the seller installer which comes from the school/corporate.
If you want prevent any consequences you can deactive your key and use
unactivated version.

https://winaero.com/blog/how-to-deac...e-product-key/

Always remember legit channels to buy Microsoft are either:

- Microsoft online store
- Authorized resellers Challenger, Sim Lim Square

Windows 10 OEM for home is around $150, for pro edition is $208.
Retail version for home is even higher at $269 and pro will be $399.
Difference between the two is the EULA, retail version you can
transfer the license to another PC.

OEM version by right is tied to the motherboard that is installed on and non-transferable.
If you have budget for high end mobo or graphic, why not set aside some budget to get a legit copy of Windows?

If not consider prebuild desktop like Dell or Asus.

thanks for the info good to know.. well if want free license, just grab your existing windows 7 or 8 key and use it on Windows 10, am too lazy to explain.. see this vid.. and it does work. Just make sure you have the correct version of windows.

another solution will be.. join their developer team as beta tester. I have been using their developers key till now.. which are valid to all versions of windows.. be it home, pro, enterprise and bla bla bla.

Now this was the web I sign up but now I think it's closed. so you will need to dig for more info to be a beta tester. https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/...-for-microsoft

you will also need to have a microsoft.com email for this.. you can create one is pretty simple.

This I am not very sure. These sellers have been there for ages, though when the account gets banned, they just create another. The fact that anyone can sell on the platform makes it difficult for them to stop people from selling counterfeit products. Carousell is likely another area to secure this sorts of deal.

yup, you are absolutely right. just that people get annoyed but the watermark that says activate windows... there are ways and means to get rid of it (legal way) but I guess not every person will go spend sometime to dig for more info.. just like my level 2 techs.. a simple activation of Java script on chrome browser will resolve all issues. End up the easy way is to re-image the entire OS. pretty dumb and lazy.

This is true. MS earns mostly from volume licensing. Individual license sale should be quite low. Typically only people that DIY will buy individual license, and that market is not big.

Actually with the OS being very cheap, I feel it will improve the sale of hardware since it is cheaper now to upgrade.

Hardware not really lah....

Unless PC enthusiasts, it is not like 1996 vs 2000 or 2006 vs 2010 when the leap in hardware/software for any device is significant enough for ppl to upgrade their devices....
