Tasked to setup server for sme including cctv/finger print access/monitoring system.

Ownself can do or need to engage 3rd party?

A server to maintain domain and shared files across 5 to 7 PC.

To purchase

1) A server
2) 5 to 7 pc include cpu+monitor + keyboard mouse.
3) A main PC that can control and restrict all users
4) 5 to 6 CCTV spot
5) Door with fingerprint access

What should i do or who can advise?

Plus, anybody familiar with PIC?

Ownself can do if you know how

If you are asking here means you don't know how

So don't accept the job, or you just outsource it

Tasked by who is very important here... if it's your laopeh's company and he's happy to let you play/experiment as your holiday project, sure go ahead :p

But seriously, if you are starting from zero background and this is a serious project, you can still learn a lot by being the one to source and coordinate the right vendors to do the job, doing the research to find out what specs to request for, comparing and evaluating specs, observing them during installation, etc. For businesses, the key thing is usually after-sales support. Something wrong, who's going to settle? You? Can afford any downtime? etc... All considerations.

outsource everything. anything screw up, blame vendor. If you have qualification to configure server and networking, then you should know how to setup the computers.

SME?
Cost is one thing.
U can go SLS or IT shop get a cheap PC to host domain but have you thought of:

- Support
If you buy PC intended for home use, their warranty is either carry in or Onsite.
But for Onsite if they notice it is a business address they may charge warranty for business.
DIY wise if anything wrong, will any of your staff be able to take time off to take the part for RMA?
Do you have spare parts/PC when it is servicing.
- Reliability
Home PC are cheap but they are not intended for 24/7 especially hosting domain
- Businesses continuity plan in case of downtime
So it is not that simple as walk into Challenger and get a cheap PC.
Plug in and install.
You have to plan who gonna to support, downtime and etc.
If you are not familiar, consult a vendor to help you.
Yes cost is high $10k + with maintenance contract. VS $800 PC self managed but if down means your business lose $.
Gosh how many SME use HWZ for business consultancy.
Later I tio NTUC points.

Just seeking to check if its more cost efficient to try and error.

Im not train. But willing to learn.

The purpose is mainly to monitor and restrict. Work related wise.. not a big issue.

If it is work related, you are getting paid (profit). However, we are not even when spoon-feeding you.

If you have no experience, take advice from fellow HWZers that say,
hire a professional (vendor) to do it and watch and learn from them closely. So next time, you know what to buy and what to do to set it all up.

After all, the real professionals (vendors) have been studying and working in this line for a purpose.
And then some random bloke with no real qualifications are trying to steal from someone else's rice bowl and profit off of it is really disgusting.

Take note, if anything goes wrong, and it will go wrong (just a matter of time), you have the vendor to provide after sales service so the company can experience little to no downtime. And you can again learn what the issue is and see how the vendors fix it.
