$200++ Headphone

Hi everyone,

Currently I'm using UE TF10 together with Cowon J3 as my portal rig.

I'm planning to get headphone for home usage. 60% shows/movies, 20% music and 20% games (most of time I will be listening to music while playing games).

I listen to hip hop, instrumental, ballads, ost/bgm and kpop songs.

I have been researching about headphones for the last 2 weeks. And I have narrowed down to these headphones:

1. ATH M50
2. Brainwaz HM5
3. AIAIAI TMA 01
4. Shure 840

I have tried both ATH M50 and Shure 840 already. Personally, I like M50 more because I find 840 is a bit too "cold" for me.

I'm quite interested in HM5 "neutral" sound signature but I can't find anywhere to audition Brainwaz HM5.

As for TMA 01, I happened to read that the studio ver. is coming out and just happened so Stereo got promotion for the non-studio ver. too. Maybe tomorrow or over the weekend, I will test them out.

Based on the sound signature, I know M50 and TMA 01 are quite close to my TF10. And i read somewhere that 840s are more "neutral" so I'm afraid that HM5 might not suits my liking.

Any senior audiophiles mind giving me some tips and recommendations?

I recommend you getting a circumaural headphone since you're using it at home.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Does either m50 or hm5 consider as circumaural headphone? Got any recommendations for such headphones?

Circumaural headphones cover your ears. M50's are on ears which makes them Supraaural.

I'll see what I can recommend for you later. On transit to home now.

Circumaural headphones will go around your ears instead of pressing on it.

You can consider the Sennheiser HD518, the Beyerdynamic DT660 and also the Audio Technica AD-700.

Try those AD-700's. It's a little over your budget though. I can vouch that they are comfortable.

I could not find much other two headphone but I have just read some reviews about AD 700. It has large sound stage and good details which is very good for shows I believe so. Just wondering if AD 700 is "open", how bad will the leak be?

Also heard due to it, the bass is kind of lacking but about this matter, I need go down and give it a try.

Do hang in there, AiAiAi is releasing the new TMA-1 Studio next week.

* Dear fellow forumners, please don't shoot me, I don't sell AiAiAi.

Need to go down and try definitely but sure will leak but not so bad if you don't go to very high volumes. If you are afraid of disturbing people in the same room as you might have to look at closed cans =)

Read the review of AiAiAi TMA-1 Studio. Looks promising but the price of it is way out of my budget ;/

I think I'm fine with the leak as I'm the only person in the room. I just more afraid due to the leak and the bass will sounds a bit weird?

AD700 has really, really weak bass, won't perform well for your hip-hop songs and explosions in games/movies.
I recommend the AKG K240 in addition to what was already recommended.

Trust your ears

Open back has some leakage depending on the volume that you set. Should be ok since it's for home usage.
