In this era, don't know why would anyone play DVD despite
it is cheaper than Blu ray.

- Poor picture quality (Not full HD)
- Compressed Surround sound either Dolby Digital or DTS
- DVD are lock at region 3

Rent/buy Blu ray which are region free playable on most blu ray player.
Netflix will be better than DVD.
Unlock DVD player are a thing of the past you won't be able to find
new sets locally except online.
Ohh sorry, I was confused between DVD and blu ray... Anyway my focus is on Blu Ray so I guess the region code doesn't matter

I got a Pioneer BR player from Audio House via Qoo10 & it does come with DVD Region Code unlocked... This is useful for those old & rare DVD collections for some people, so don’t be so narrow-minded that only BR discs is the only way to go...

Also, technically BR discs do have Region Coding but just that SEA, Japan, Korea & US discs are of same Region A. So most of our BR players surely can’t play UK, Australia & China discs, etc...

Mine is Pioneer BDP-180 & it does playback SACD too, just not sure if its audio quality matches Denon, Marantz & other audiophile dedicated SACD players or not...

i saw a pioneer set bdp-x300 going for $6xx
and then i was thinking why not go for a player that can play 4K disc too..
the sony x700 seems to be cheapest player that can play 4k and sacd too
but its dvd playback should be code locked.

Indeed, at $600+ probably can get a mid-range 4K/UHD player... At least can go rent UHD discs for movie parties/marathon... 👍

Maybe can search online for any info to region unlock a certain brand & model but must also check if the remote control buttons required for region unlocking are available with the player you can get... Other option is to ask the sales guy if they can unlock for you or not...

In terms of picture quality, if I already have an high-end TV do I still need a very good Blu-Ray player like Pioneer UDP-LX500 or just a normal player like Sony UBP-X700 ?

Not necessary UBP-X700 is good enough, take note LX500 lacks
smart feature.
Meaning no apps like Netlix and etc. unlike UBP-X700.

Do also get a good HDMI cable like those from Elecom.

What do you classify as a high end TV?
Most top shelf models have a better video processor than the players. The advantage of the LX 500 is it plays music well and it can send a pure signal for the video chip in the TV to process.

Considering most TV already have smart features.. it's consider redundance to also have same app on the player ?

Panasonic GZ2000..

Yes true.. it's better to let the TV video processor do the job.

About the signal, I am a little confused..who sends the audio signal to the external speakers ? TV or player ?

I am confused about what you are saying now..
The LX 500 has a good DAC and plays stereo music well, especially when it is played through a good amp.
No one buys a player like that with a mediocre soundbar...

If you want a basic setup, just get the Sony X700 and be done.

As I suspect that you are using basic setup meaning using TV
for both video and audio.
Than getting Sony UBP-X700 will be sufficient.

Like petetherock mentioned, Pioneer LX-500 is for those who
want "True" home theater experience.
Meaning top quality video and sound comprise of high end TV as well as
decent AVR with Atmos speakers.

You have such a nice TV, why not spend some money to make the whole viewing experience better?
But please watch high res material on it. Youtube videos are a poor choice.

Blu ray disc wise you can buy/rent.
Rent wise, there is a shop called Rida Video Center.
They have lots of Blu ray you can rent, mainly imported from USA.

Price wise is around $7 per piece, they also have rental package.
Blu ray disc picture and audio quality stand out as compare with
Netflix and etc.

Since Netflix videos are compressed thus videos are able to stream
without buffering.
