Digital Music Playback

As the old-guards of consumer music - Vinyl records, Cassette tapes bought us widespread availability affordable analog media; Dat, CD, DVD, SACD revolution bought us into digital world to minimize signal loss, noiseless media. Today: File based like wav, mp3 to high res - flac, dsd to network & internet streaming music usher in the era of ease of transmission connected, easy access to enormous amount of collection, high-resolution media.

Is this your typical music output platform:
Taking an analog signal from Laptop/Mobile headphone 3.5mm earphone jack/DVD player RCA, connect to active speaker (which are Class D - it converts to PWM, amplifies it, and converts back to analog at the output? Did anyone actually knew that Laptop/Mobile headphone/DVD output begin from digital source, but internally uses DAC to convert digital to analog ?!?

Have you ever considered/taken a digital approach to music playback for listening?

Direct digital amplification (ie. Full digital path), ie. amplifier that takes a digital signal (SPDIF/PCM - a square wave) converts it to PWM (another square wave), amplifies it, and converts it to analog at the output,

Anyone to share any insights, experience you have gone direct digital?
