When the lease of his three-room flat in Lorong 4 Toa Payoh runs out in 2066, first aid and swimming coach Low Mong Seng, 34, expects the Government to give him “something in compensation’’.

Mr Calvin Loh, 38, a hardware goods showroom manager, said he is also getting anxious about the value of his Commonwealth Close flat, which has 47 years of lease left.
He noted how a former neighbour sold his three-room unit for S$400,000 four years ago, but a similar unit in the same block changed hands for just S$280,000 a few months ago.

I wouldnt agree with compensation. If government does that, it is very unfair, especially to those who does care about the number of remaining lease years and hence buy a bto with poor location.

EDMW ‘discussions’ are like FB.

Many are super ‘emo’ with war cry like ‘70% vote for it’ PAP , ‘who did you vote for’ .......
And many EDMW just in denial, buy at Oppo price want iPhone X type.

Not only hdb flats are subject to depreciation. All EC flats and leasehold condo face the same fate. Even factories and industrial land with leases of 60 years and 30 years, which are common, will have to be surrendered to the lessors at the end of the lease.

Many in EDMW/FB would quote Mr LKY / GCT etc & demand perpetual high value for their aged flats.
Many believe 99 holds value forever.
