Getting to Huaqiangbei?

Is it possible to do this as a day trip from HK and be back at night?
Will the immigration points be packed if we take the train route?

Possible. Which train route are you thinking of? HSR to Shenzhen than change to MRT or HK MRT to Lowu and change to MRT after crossing border?

Avoid weekends.

You can also take an express bus. With seating and less stops than MRT. https://shenzhenshopper.com/transport/hk-to-sz

Can check the other thread about my experience with HSR from West Kowloon.

For HSR back to HK, just try to make it for the last train or the one before it.

The last train departs Futian at 22:36 the second last at 22:09. As the other poster has said, both immigration is on HK side so u just need to get on board the train in time

If you want to take the normal MTR, you can exit via Futian Checkpoint/Lok Ma Chau, the last train is at 22:55 but you should turn up at immigration around 9.45pm latest as you will need to go through both immigration (and cross a rather long air conditioned bridge) before reaching the HK side of the border. Also they close immigration around 20-30 minutes before the last train departs Lok Ma Chau.

Alternatively if you want to take the MTR from Lowu:
