For a 2 floor house you will need 2 APs or 2 routers with one acting as AP.

Ya doing that now. Checking if this is worth upgrading to.
Maybe get a newer Aimesh capable router instead to replace my old 56U

If you can't run wires maybe your should get those mesh routers. A 3 pack mesh should cost the same or cheaper than 2 Asus routers

late revisions of ac88 cannot flash ddwrt due to encrypted bootloader. Only earlier revision can but those may have wireless problems.

both ASUS AC87 n AC88 have problems with their 2.4Ghz WIFI, keep seeing signal drop by itself n come back on again. I have to go RMA liao. will avoid these 2 models from now.

Any other models that did not have drop in signal so far?

RMA AC87 they will give you AC86 instead, which is so much better (arguably better than 88 also)!

I RMAed both 87 and 88... now both 86 and 88 working perfect.

previous firmwares have a common issue which was 5Ghz signal dropping frequently...
but it's fixed since the previous few versions...a happy user now

Anyone has experience setting AC88 router as the main router and then set up another Asus Router as AP mode wirelessly?

Or need to connect the AP mode Asus Router via LAN cable to the AC88?

I am thinking of setting a second router as a VPN router for VPN connection only.

Is this a feasible idea?

I think if you want to set it as AP mode wirelessly you have to use aimesh or set it up as repeater mode.

Also I don't think Asus will let you set a AP up for VPN connection. You have to use it in router mode for that.

Unless you have some special need for the VPN connection to be on a seperate router, just use the main router for VPN
