Disable HE frame support if you don't have AX client yet.

purpleberry 25-03-2019 06:06 PM

With wifi 6, is there a need for devices like Linksys Velop for 5-room flat?

Yes disable this if you are using aimesh with ac5300.

I got this last weekend and was trying out the setting. with HE enable, my wifi speed suffered by 50%. disable and speed back to normal.

May I know ur ac5300 is primary or secondary router?

forkie 26-03-2019 12:33 PM

Initially I was wondering why they promised Wifi6 have better speed.
I only managed to get 200mpbs download/upload on my mobile phone on 1gb fiber plan which is same as previous AC routers.

Recently a new update and speed improved tremendously where is comparable to wired connection. I like it lol

Ax88u as router, 2 x 5300 as nodes. With HE disable, my iphone wifi speed can hit 600Mbps up 600 Mbps down on 1 Gbps plan.
If i enable HE, straight drop to less than 200Mbps.

Wow !!! That's some speed on mobile phone. Judging by the right cut-out, Samsung S10 right ?

can show the link rate?

forkie 26-03-2019 05:21 PM

Yup using Samsung S10.
Router in living room, when in master bedroom the speed range from 500-700mbps.
When in living room speed will be faster like 700-800mbps.

Eh where to find the link rate to show?

havealaughclown 26-03-2019 05:23 PM

Just changed last month at the office for me bros - As one of the first Wi-Fi 6 routers, the Asus RT-AX88U is fast with tons of features but suffers from the lack of clients and high cost.

I never did much optimization so the usual devices speed range about 100-200mbps for upload/download.

I had enable HE before firmware update and the speed is as normal around 200mbps which kinda make me disappointed coz I hyping for blazing speed.

forkie 26-03-2019 09:57 PM

ZZZzz KNN the WIFI6 still not ideal.
Now I yaya papaya go Router settings play play toggle HE frame.....
My 1200mpbs rate GONE !!!!!

Initially after firmware update so shiok in room 648mpbs link rate, Living room 1200mpbs link rate.

Then itchy hand go toggle the HE frame.... poof !!!!! WIFI6 gone and link rate back to 286...… Now enable back HE frame but my speed still stuck at 286 !!!!!! duno why my wow oooo wee speed gone liao ! 气死人 !!!!

Ah Ken 26-03-2019 10:26 PM

Can enlighten me what is this HE frame? Noob in this field... Google doesn't say much, maybe I don't know how to google right.. :s22:

AC2 26-03-2019 10:33 PM

just reflash the firmware lar.( load old version then back to latest)

It just shows that the current firmware for the ax 88 is still unstable .

Anyway this router still new. give them some time. confirm better firmware will be out later.

actually i thinking Ax88u as node since wifi6 haha

forkie 26-03-2019 11:01 PM

Fixed it. Have to power off and on the router again. On router page rebooting or re-enabling HE frame cannot work. Speed stuck at miserable 286mbps unless off the whole router.
Phew ! Heng can get back the speed but yah the new wifi6 still need allot improvement.

New feature for AX router to enable high speed data transfer which is wifi6 speed. But some equipment and device may be affected by the new feature which may slow the speed instead. Thus got this feature to enable and disable.

forkie 26-03-2019 11:33 PM

Ran a test on other devices.
My S8 getting good speed as well.
428mbps link rate in master bedroom.
648mbps link rate in living room.
This new AX88U router is pretty impressive.

My old AC88U hardly get anything close to 400mbps on 5G.
300-400 is on very good days.

JayceOoiCom 28-03-2019 10:08 AM

Yeah... Just managed to get my AX88U back. Going to try out the latest firmware as well. :)

ksksksks 29-03-2019 07:28 PM

I got the ax11000u. Not much difference with this ax88u in terms of speed but the range is better.
Just some tips in case some of you guys find ur wifi speed slow or your printer have a hard time getting connected.. Disable smart band steering and make sure 2.4ghz is on 20mhz only. Make sure AX is off and also don’t turn on DFS channel.

Actually the link rate also not accurate one ma.

I always see my devices with 866 link rate but when I do speed test also 200+ mbps.

I also dunno why for some reason during speed tests, when I choose m1 server I will get nice speed (>500) but other server will be just 200+-

you are supposed to choose the server related to your provider what... :D

that's the thing. i'm on starhub. even my own starhub server gave me 200+ mbps.

only M1 server gave me the highest dl/ul speed consistently (from my multiple observations over quite some time). it's always double the speed of other servers.

makes me wonder if m1 fibre is better. :o

squarepipe 04-04-2019 08:53 AM

you peeps who buy this router don't stay with parents or spouse one? It literally looks like an eyesore.

AC2 04-04-2019 09:45 AM

No leh, same look at RT AC88U. Anyway just a router why u so mind the look? I left it one side dont even bother if its there as long got connection.

ksksksks 04-04-2019 09:56 AM

Think only m1 won’t throttle speed, Singtel at best 500mbps. M1 easily touches 600-68x

My RT-AX88U cannot be powered on after less than 5 months. Expected better from a premium product. :(

My Netgear r6300 v1 is still working after 7 years!!! :(

What? It has same issue as RT-AC86U? Asus build quality drops lately?

Still within warranty. Send in for “servicing” ;)

Firmware needs improvement

As above... i think the firmware needs further improvement.

I have 2 internet lines (Viewqwest on port 1, SIngtel on wan port, mio tv on port 4).

When i run dual wan config (fail over mode), (primary- Viewqwest, sleeping-Singtel), end up the primary internet status become unplugged and the sleeping internet status cannot get IP address.

MY RT-AC88U was working fine under this config.

Dual wan with both lines active, seems fine.
But Ai Protection will only work in fail over mode dual wan

Hi! Sorry to revive this thread (hopefully it's not dead). You're the only one in my hours of research who used Dual WAN.

I was thinking of getting this router because I have 2 ISPs (Singtel and Starhub). I was wondering if you tried aggregation. Does it work (can you even aggregate 2 different ISP)? If not, have you tried the Merlin firmware and see if fail-over mode works? Since you said your backup ISP can't get an IP address. Or has Asus released a firmware that fixed it?

phayze 13-06-2019 10:15 AM

Dun think you can do link aggregation on dual wan as the other end dun support. U can do load balancing on dual WAN.

Lol i was thinking the same thing. whole family thinks the entire Asus line of routers is a joke. Make something ugly enough, and it becomes funny.

:( For me, i think the Ax-92u and Ax-88u looks ok. but the "spider" design is just ..... i dont even know what to say about it.

I have a tarantula at home that would poop all over the spider design.

Family only allows me to get 'clean' designs, like netgear orbi, Velop, google mesh, ubiquiti unifi nanoHD...

Ah I see. I guess I can just use load balancing. Maybe I could try out link aggregation when I eventually buy the router. But as long as load balancing works, I'm good.
