A bit off topic but did anyone try using surfshark in China? I'm just curious if it works and if it does, how well.

https://www.reddit.com/r/China/comme...vpn_for_china/

A bit old news but it seems to work in China but not fast. It may or may not work in China now since GFW evolves pretty fast.

From.what I gathered from various websites:

Updated on 31 Dec 2018

1) VPN vendors consistently working in China well over the years are limited.

Express VPN
Nord VPN
Astrill VPN
VPN.ac
Vypr VPN
...
2) Sometimes working sometimes not working
Pure VPN (most of time should work)
Hotspot Shield Elite (most of time should work).
CyberGhost
...

3) Usually not working in China:
Windscribe
Private Internet Access
Ivacy
TunnelBear
...

Edit to add:
4) VPN which is working now

Turbo VPN (tested the free version in Dec 2018 and with decent speed)

Surfshark

Seed4Me (tested in Dec 2018, works but slow)

Thanks for the insight! Good to know!

I found a more recent article (early December) about surfshark working in China.

Private Internet Access is known not working as per the report in this thread.

Note for PIA and Netflix on 6 Jan 2019: it should work with Netflix now but the stability may be a problem so it may not be recommended for Netflix.

ExpressVPN, Nord, Windscribe, Surfshark, Cyberghost, IPVanish and vyprVPN are known to work with Netflix.

Nord is known to be reliable but may be a bit slow.

ExpressVPN seems to be the best all-rounder to justify its higher price.

Windscribe and Surfshark look like good value buy for Netflix.

Chinese users are also reporting good speed (Netflix 4K support) with ShadowSocks (SS/SSR) servers.

Edit on 2 Jan 2019, the following link may not be accurate. VPN.ac, Ivacy and Pure VPN should work with Netflix.

https://thebestvpn.com/vpn-netflix/

TunnelBear (4/4 servers blocked)
VPN.ac (4/4 servers blocked)
Private Tunnel (5/5 servers blocked)
Kaspersky Secure Connection (4/4 servers blocked)
Avast Secureline VPN (5/5 servers blocked)
F-Secure Freedome (5/5 servers blocked)
Hoxx VPN (3/3 servers blocked)
Anonymous VPN (4/4 servers blocked)
CactusVPN (5/5 servers blocked)
Celo VPN (5/5 servers blocked)
Hide My IP (5/5 servers blocked)
Hide.me (5/5 servers blocked)
Ivacy (4/4 servers blocked)
iVPN (5/5 servers blocked)
OneVPN (5/5 servers blocked)
PersonalVPN (5/5 servers blocked)
ProXPN (5/5 servers blocked)
PureVPN (4/4 servers blocked)
Ra4w VPN (4/4 servers blocked)
SecureVPN (4/4 servers blocked)

Hi All,

I have sign up for Ivacy VPN. I'm using it to watch Netflix with US content.

I managed to get it working on my iphone and my ipad.

However, I have a sony android TV, i installed the app on the TV, when I turn on the VPN and go into netflix, it shows me proxy error.

Anyway to go around this? Do i have to set up the VPN on the router instead?

My TV is connected via ethernet cable, not on Wifi.
TIA
Is there any ad blockers installed like Blokada?
There is a conflict with these ad blockers as only one VPN can be established.

i've been working there for years.
PRC there do not use the old VPN for youtube or gaming.
they use SSR/V2Ray/shadowguard. speed was much much better than VPN
watch 4k video super smooth. due to using premium CN2 network
Dun worry too much abt ip ban.
you can also 回墙watch geo-blocked chinese streams

basically they buy VPS from google/alicloud/amazon..e.g
some become provider. most well known and expensive was rixcloud
check this review https://www.evernote.com/shard/s609/...c350e6c55ac4c3

there's many free ssr server too on telegram group and google+
but telegram was blocked in china. u need to add sock5 by clicking this address on ur phone to auto add or use those here

i'm using cordcloud provider. simi 19大 or garment meeting also stay open
this angmo in china written a simple guide

Sorry to dig this from the graveyard but I find it very helpful.

Telegram got tons of free SSR servers.. I just connected a few from japan servers and works great from SG. Anyone from China can try this to test?

For those who want to use these Free *SSRs,

1. Download Potatso lite for IOS/android or SSR for windows (https://github.com/shadowsocksrr/sha...sharp/releases)

2. Copy any one of the SSR URLs in Telegram group (https://web.telegram.org/#/im?p=@gyjclub). Choose the latest one as the old ones might had been banned by China GFW.

3. Paste it in the SSR program and run it.

For those who are new in this term SSR, I suggest you google it. It's almost similar to VPN, which will also bypass China GFW.

It is in the list of not working VPN for Netflix as of Dec2018. VPN.ac, Ivacy, PureVPN are among the list. Private Internet Access is also known not working as per the report in this thread.

ExpressVPN, Nord, Windscribe, Surfshark, Cyberghost, IPVanish and vyprVPN are known to work with Netflix.

Ivacy user may check, some site say it works. Some says not. I believe it works.

Probably for PureVPN users as well.

Nord is known to be reliable but may be a bit slow.

ExpressVPN seems to be the best all-rounder to justify its higher price.

Chinese users are also reporting good speed (Netflix 4K support) with ShadowSocks (SS/SSR) servers.

Well done! If you are planning on updating this weekly/monthly, can we make this a separate sticky post? Very useful for VPN users.

So much valuable information in this thread, thanks for the VPN functioning in China analysis. I'm using Surfshark, it's mentioned here that it works in China, I can only add that it unlocks US Netflix content too. I have used CyberGhost free version previously, but they canceled it and before that used Express VPN which I enjoyed, but yeah, they're a bit pricey. So switch to Surfshark mainly because of the price-speed-quality combo.
