So much valuable information in this thread, thanks for the VPN functioning in China analysis. I'm using Surfshark, it's mentioned here that it works in China, I can only add that it unlocks US Netflix content too. I have used CyberGhost free version previously, but they canceled it and before that used Express VPN which I enjoyed, but yeah, they're a bit pricey. So switch to Surfshark mainly because of the price-speed-quality combo.
Does it work well for 4k streaming? Plan to use it on my Sony android TV.

4k streaming for US Netflix using traditional VPN is not easy based on the feedbacks here. You may have to lower your expectations to 1080p which may still be not bad on 4k TV.

The reports I read is that using ShadowSocks Server may be promising, and probably new technology like WireGuard.

Edit to add: some say use smartdns.
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/h...n-5760776.html

Smartdns may have limitations though if the ISP implements DNS Hijacking or Transparent Proxy (StarHub??).

I see. Several reports say it does not work here. Good to know it works.

Some websites including a 2016 PIA forum post also say it does not support Netflix.

But then I read they start to work on it 7 months ago and now it seems to work again with US Netflix. Nice their SVP keeps updating on the situation in Reddit.

Are you connnected to the same US server for your tv as you did for your iPhone and iPad?

If you are, then sometimes Netflix could have blocked it if you are streaming from a tv.

I used to use smart dns and it worked on my computer but not via my tv.
Checked with the provider and they confirmed that streaming via tv was blocked.
So there is no solution for TV apps?

Back after 5yrs in China

Hi,
Just posted back from China after 5yrs.
Started with StrongVPN initially, but really cannot make it in China.

Switched to Astrill and had been with them for last 4years plus.
I had my Asus RT AC68U flashed with Merlin so that my family members are unable to use.
Personally, I do switch the server at least one a month and we have no problem assessing FB, WA, Google, Netflix, Toggle (Sg server), etc...

We find that having a VPN router is fasting than using the Astrill APP.

Hope it helps.

Back after 5yrs in China - China Server

Checked and found from Astrill, there is no China when using Astrill Applet. And the workaround is to use the Astrill Client App for China server.

getting PIA to work on Netflix is so unreliable that I've given up on it and used Windscribe instead.. I still use PIA as my main VPN client for all other purposes and decives for its consistently fast speed

Sent from Samsung SM-G965F using GAGT

Sorry to dig this from the graveyard but I find it very helpful.

Telegram got tons of free SSR servers.. I just connected a few from japan servers and works great from SG. Anyone from China can try this to test?

For those who want to use these Free *SSRs,

1. Download Potatso lite for IOS/android or SSR for windows (https://github.com/shadowsocksrr/sha...sharp/releases)

2. Copy any one of the SSR URLs in Telegram group (https://web.telegram.org/#/im?p=@gyjclub). Choose the latest one as the old ones might had been banned by China GFW.

3. Paste it in the SSR program and run it.

For those who are new in this term SSR, I suggest you google it. It's almost similar to VPN, which will also bypass China GFW.
Just to add, I think it is worth to pay for Shadowrocket under iOS. I myself paid for it before my trip to China last month.

There is also official shadowsock client for Android. I like Shadowrocket more.

Telegram group is popular place to get feed on the free SS server.

For my short trip to China last month, I use free VPN like Turbo VPN and Seed4Me to have access to the following site and then use the free SSR URL from the site.
https://free-ss.site/

The URL usually works, I mainly used US and SG servers. They are short lived so you will have to change every day.

For long term stay in China, it may be worth paying for both a traditional VPN like VPN.ac and an SSR server provider.

Astrill is always among the top VPNs for bypassing China GFW but it may be a bit pricey for that purpose, just like Express VPN. I believe it was the most popular one before 2018.

VPN.ac and Nord may be cheaper alternative for bypassing China GFW.

There are also reports that Astrill may not work in sensitive times.

Ref: this guy has real first hand experiences and speed test data of quite some VPNs for bypassing China GFW. He did not recommend Astrill.

Of course SSR seems to be the popular choice now.

Never came across GOM in any of the recommended VPN list. So just Google a bit and Wikipedia says it was specifically made for Singapore internet censorship. The review from various websites say this is easy to use as a browser extension but better buy a full blown VPN at the price if better privacy and security are desired.

From the list maybe you want to consider Windscribe which is at similar price.

https://www.techradar.com/sg/vpn/bes...extensions-vpn

You can try free version of Windscribe first. It offers 10GB per month free which is pretty good for web browsing.

Windscribe like not bad. I tried the 10gb version. Anyone with experience with it? I saw ppl saying that there's like netflix dedicated servers also.

I also see stacksocial got lifetime promo for it, legit or not?

I only tried the free version and in my experiences it works fine for iOS (iPhone 6S) but the Android client sometimes does not work (Huawei P20).

I do not use Netflix myself. But speed is decent even for a round trip back to SingTel with their LA server.

https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/3034143161

8.48 Mbps download and 9.39Mbps upload.

It is pretty good for the free version that I can choose from quite some servers.

And the report here says it is working for Netflix.

StackSocial deal is legitimate but I read somewhere life time means 5 years expired date in the VPN world. But 5 years in the VPN world seems very long already.
