does VPN throttle the internet speed? if so which VPN is recommended that is fast and has a no log policy?
VPN is supposed to help overcome ISP throttling issues but it's more applicable for other countries users who are on much slower broadband speed and less for us who are mostly on gigabit fibre plans.

as mentioned in my earlier post, speed depends on many factors, other than your own expectations, it will also depend on your own client device capability, server location, server bandwidth, level of encryption, type of VPN protocol you are using. how much reduction from your current internet speed would be considered too much for you?

thanks for your reply. currently I think using WiFi can hit abt 400-500mbps (speedtest). if using a vpn halves the speed I think it's still ok? not very sure what's a normal figure using a VPN.

most VPN provider that I tested will slow down your download and upload speed even when you are connected to their nearest server. The % of download and upload speed that you can achieve when connecting to VPN vs without vpn differ between each VPN provider. Most VPN could reach 20-30% of possible speed. A few of them may be around 6-20%. Speedify consistently achieve 80% and above but they don't support Netflix streaming.

Most of them claim to have no log policy but it depends how you define what is consider no log. All of them have to have some kind of tracking on the number of concurrent connection to their server (since they limit to 5 or less connection) with exception of Windscribe that has unlimited connection.

My last speedtest in Singapore against Singapore server back in January are as follows:-

M1 1GBps fibre via LAN. Without VPN download and upload are btw 816-939Mbps

Achievable download speed
Speedify 81.4% @729Mbps
Tunnelbear 29.3% @270Mbps
Windscribe 28.9% @261Mbps
VPN Unlimited 27.2% @255Mbps
Cyberghost 25.7% @234Mbps
Buffered VPN 22.8% @209Mbps
NordVPN 21.5% @197Mbps
PIA 20.4% @184Mbps
ivacy 20% @169Mbps
ExpressVPN 16.2% @144Mbps
HMA 16.2% @137Mbps
IVPN 15% @135Mbps
SaferVPN 10.6% @94Mbps
Astrill 6.7% @61Mbps

Achievable upload speed
Speedify over 86.9% @800Mbps++
Windscribe 32.5% @280Mbps
VPN Unlimited 28.8% @254Mbps
NordVPN 29.8% @243Mbps
Cyberghost 26.8% 240Mbps
PIA 25.8% @223Mbps
Buffered VPN 24.5% @208Mbps
HMA 23.5% @202Mbps
Tunnelbear 22.4% @192Mbps
SaferVPN 21% @179Mbps
ExpressVPN 15.5% @140Mbps
IVPN 16% @138Mbps
IVACY 12.7% @112Mbps
Astrill 5.9% @51Mbps

I will run another speedtest and will post the results here next week.

you can try the free windscribe account and see if you are ok with the speed then decide again.. otherwise it's still a very good free VPN account to keep and use if you need to in future

you can try the free windscribe account and see if you are ok with the speed then decide again.. otherwise it's still a very good free VPN account to keep and use if you need to in future

I am using the 10GB Windscribe as my main VPN for free Wi-Fi. It is pretty decent for my occasional use. Occasionally I also use Tunsafe (wireguard) and Shadowsocks just for testing purposes.

Then occasionally I also use Transocks and SpeedIn free VPN for China geo-blocked account, just for testing, no real need to use them as I have paid VIP to Youku and QQ music which do not require VPN once you pay.

Hi, I would like to have a VPN to bypass geoblocking on YouTube. so let's say I choose the SG server for NordVPN, does it bypass the geoblock? or I'll need to select, say, the TW server?

Appreciate your replies!
For solely bypassing geoblocking on YouTube, you can use either:

1) VPN client running on router

2) VPN client running on OS (i.e. Windows)

3) Proxy add-on/extension for web browsers like Chrome/Firefox

yeah. I was thinking of setting up the VPN client on the router so that don't have to individually set up each device that I use at home. and more importantly I can't set up a VPN on the apple tv

however it's the speed throttling that I'm concerned about. therefore wanted to see if anyone has a good recommended vpn that doesn't compromise on speed too much.
