The risk about sharing is you will never know what the other persons are using the VPN for.

Most are using it to download files and watching movies. These activities are quite low in the radar.

Some may use it for terrorism, child pornographic, drugs, etc. These activities may put the account owner in trouble too if caught.

The latter activities are in top radar by regulators and enforcement agencies.
That's the risk you have to take by using a commercial VPN service. You have to hope the company does not log and sell your data.

You are probably safer renting a VPS and running a VPN server on there.

I think digital ocean has a VPS for just $5/month.
The downside is you have to manually install a VPN server and you have to manually migrate the vps for it to show up as other country.

You are talking about different risks.

I'm highlighting risks in sharing the VPN account with friends.

Risks of using a commercial VPN?

Then you can mitigate this by signing with 1 of the established providers who have been long in the business.

Take Astrill as an example. Their subscription cost is 1 of the most expensive and they have been around for quite a long time.

Compare to a provider who is new and claiming to give you a free VPN service.

Which one is likely to pawn their customers?

If you are able to find out then wouldn't it defeat the privacy objective?
I dont want to know, what he is browsing. I just want to know whether he is using it or not. Is there a way to know how many devices are connected to a VPN out of the 5 allowed?

It is still infringement of some privacy isn't it? Just my 2 cents.

Anyway if 5 connections used up, I don't think you can connect.

By the way, you think there is 0 risk with the VPS?

It is the same thing. You are relying on some providers.

And you can't be 100% sure of this reliance.

True you can't guarantee you are not being snooped on when using a cloud service. At least for a VPS you get more flexibility when configuring your services

Easier way out. Just rely on the established VPN providers. There are only a few of them. They are long in the business.

Skip those new ones. Especially those that charge very cheaply! Cheap means something must give.

It is the standard VPN plan with only 1 connection.

Cost me USD27.7 for the whole year(after applying promo code 25% off)
Streaming speed is very good.
