Sorry dont understand. what do you mean by official andriod tv os? Minix is not? Dont really know the diff.
erm... android boxes like nvidia shield and mibox run on official Android TV OS with the leanback launcher and built in Chromecast feature comes with TV version of Netflix that supports 4k streaming..

not those china rooted/modified android boxes with mobile version of Android and Netflix..

the interface looks different as well..

anyways I'm not using Nord.. I use Windscribe to access us and uk Netflix and it's able to stream in HD but not fast enough for 4k

Sent from Samsung SM-G965F using GAGT

Popular official Android TV box: very limited choices

Cheap one : Mi Box and Mi Box S
More expensive one: Nvidia Shield TV

For non-Android TV device, you can try some other device like Google Chromecast 4K, or from vendors like Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Sony.

Free VPNs are usually limited and not recommended. However free version of paid VPN can probably be used as a test drive before paying.

No 1: TunnelBear, 512MB per month, 1.5GB with PC client installed

No 2: windscribe, 10 GB per month with confirmed email, multiple server

Seems WindScribe free version is not bad for casual users. Tested the HK server and Los Angeles server and the Speedtest results are pretty good (>=50Mbps download speed,>=25Mbps upload speed).

VPN vs Socks 5 Proxy vs Smart DNS

Security/Privacy
VPN > Socks 5 Proxy > Smart DNS

Speed
VPN < Socks 5 Proxy < Smart DNS

So probably VPN should be the general choices and some VPN vendors does provide Socks 5 Proxy and Smart DNS options as well.

If Streaming 4K is important (eg: Netflix 4K), then Smart DNS and Socks 5 Proxy can be used.

Edit to add: interestingly VPN are more used by foreigners in China but Chinese Youtubers are using Socks 5 Proxy (SS, SSR, etc) more. This is probably because of the difficulties VPN vendors have in mainland China. And probably because of the ease of deployment of the server (usually open source) on various VPS providers like Google or Digital Ocean.

i think u got it partially wrong abt ss
socks5 wasnt as secured. tats why ss comes in.
it creates an encrypted connection between the Shadowsocks client on your local computer and the one running on your proxy server, using an open-source internet protocol called SOCKS5

here's a good introduction

Thanks for the info. Details may be a bit different from the articles I cited but the conclusions seem to be the same.

yes.
but if user set traffic rules. it's generally safer
example all *.gov.sg domain use DIRECT or to ur own server. not thru proxy
+ using mitm and tls/https

Hmm Amazon lightsail $5 plan seems better then the $5 digital ocean one.

If you understand Chinese, here is a good compilation.
https://doub.io/vps-tj/

For example if you only need 0.5TB transfer, then only US$2.5/month
