Wow.

Such arrogance on their part.
Mark Singapore down to yet another Asian country.

Asian countries like Korea, HK and SG have high fibre pentration and connectivity. It's the western countries still on 100mbps servers.

"Most Asian countries lack international bandwidth"

Awesome customer service too, " no need to threaten us"

Why are you guys still giving them your business? Get your own cloud server, use as seedbox, storage space, music server, vent server and VPN
Well, what they said is true unfortunately.
In my experience a solid 50Mbps line in Europe works much better than 500Mbps here. You have to understand that it has nothing to do with high speed fibre connections, it is the international exchange bandwidth that matters and it is heavily capped across all ISPs here regardless what they state... The only way to obey these caps is to use VPN from companies that have their servers in hosting centers, like Astrill which is using Softlayer. Hosting companies sell their services to companies (like Astrill) on a different terms (and prices too) and do not have caps like residential users do. This is understandable at some point, because some residential users could misuse their high speeds connections to open up hosting facilities or hosting related services. The other thing is that ISPs here simply can't afford users to have a true high speed connections as Singapore doesn't have such great international connectivity and capacity. So they "lure" people with high fibre connections and fastest internet connections in the world but... that's just on a paper

I have also tried few VPNs and it is hard to beat Astrill. Their Singapore 1 (USA) server is amazing. It actually allows me to fully utilize my 300Mbps from VQ when downloading files or streaming Netflix. I do not use torrents though.

You don't have to be a rocket science specialist to prove that, run a simple test by downloading of 1 GB file from US on a single connection (without JD, IDM etc):

Without VPN goes up to 2 MB/s (takes a lot of time to reach this speeds...)
Astrill VPN using Singapore 1 (USA) goes up to 25MB/s and rising all the time which could possibly max out my 300Mbps on a single connection.

Thanks for a very useful post, stiwipl. I didn't know that vpn can actually improve fibre speed.

Come on a lot of us do not suffer any issues with Astrill . maybe u can try to move out of Singapore and try the internet from Malaysia and put the blame on Singtel exchange

Disappointed after i paid. Gave my whole computer and router settings for them to fix through TeamViewer, took 3whole hours, they messed up my computer configurations instead...

They do not take responsibilities at all. And when i tried to find their governing body, it's NOT under the US LAW!

Don't sign up for Astrill. It's really horrifying. Their service is one of the worst i've seen, it may seem good at first with easy questions, but when they can't fix it, they blame everything on the consumers instead. What a douche.

I'm trying out Astrill. A lot of servers in Asia like Singapore, HK, China are greyed out. Why are they greyed out? IP all used up already is it?

Ask them to provide access to all servers during your trial. This is what I did and had no issues.

I have no idea how you are achieving such speeds.
Any settings I need to look out for ?

Signed up for full trial.

On ST, I get 4-8mb/s on single thread for that file.
Switch on Astrill, I hit up Singapore 1 server and I only get 300kb-2mb/s

Even websites are crawling

I don't do any magic. I am on VQ though, I just connect to Singapore 1 (USA) server. Can you check speedtest here once connected to Singapore 1 (USA) server?

finally got free time to test it out again...

Multi Threaded download gives me 8-14mb/sec on Singtel to my us server. Speed fluctuates quite a bit.

On astrill VPN, it hits 14 within 10 secs and stays there on a single thread. Any idea how I could make the multi threaded downloads to work over vpn ? 2nd thread keeps timing out.

I would say slight improvement over VPN, as the connection speed is steady but if I could get multi threaded downloads working, the speeds will probably be better and worth the investment for VPN monthly.

Back to my testing....

multi threaded worked for one of the test files.
Speed flew up to 45mb/s for it

but it's flaky and only works for one in about 8 files I test
