Saw a post about someone asking if it is possible to go back to the original CFE and firmware.
The answer is YES! Tried restoring the original bootloader from the backup made before flashing the new cfe. It works.
I find the router much hotter and not as stable with Asus WRT as it is with the original dlink firmware.

its not hotter. it has always been running at 90deg

I had a problem where the router kept restarting at CFE. So after uploading the firmware partially, the upload will stop when it restarts.

What worked for me was Asus recovery tool + Merlin RT-AC68U_378.55_0 firmware version.
After that, I could flash new firmware through the normal firmware web interface or CFE web interface without issues.

I have the same issues and the internet connection kept cutting off. I will try your method

I tried few times don’t sure is correct method. I believed along the way may not done correctly

I’m also struck at the uploading off firmware and got disconnect half way thru.

I had to do it a little different.

1) after I've managed to reach step 7 and see the cfe miniweb server, set your client ip to 192.168.1.xx.

2) do a "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" and leave this running.

3) monitor the pings and you see a pattern that it will drop off after 10-15 seconds before it works again.

4) during this "working" 10-15 seconds period, only then proceed to press and hold reset button for 20 seconds before letting go.

5) the connection should now be stable for you to proceed with the asus firmware upload.

Like ralph79 wrote, you need to set a static IP on your computer during step 7. try his method and see whether you can get it done, use chrome when in asus miniweb though :)

What is the method to restore back dlink firmware so that can start all over again

I haven't try to restore back to dlink firmware, as i like the asus firmware better. If you think ralph79 method is too complicated, then you can use the easier recovery method. That is, power off 868l. Use a triangular clip (bend it straight), insert the clip into the reset hole until you feel its depress (click sound), then power on the router (clip still depress) and hold on the reset for about 20 secs, then release the clip. It works for me everytime (you would be either in cfe miniweb if flash correctly or ddwrt recovery if flash not correctly.) For this method, there is no need to ping or use wps button to
clear nvram.

Ethernet error unidentified network. I have tried few time on your method and still not able to connect to the router via lan

Did you connect to lan port 2/3/4 ?

Did you set the mac address correctly when you edit the cfe file ?

IPv4/static IP (192.168.1.3 subnet 255.255.255.0) in your PC ? then use chrome go to 192.168.1.1
or
(192.168.0.3 subnet 255.255.255.0 - in case still in dlink recovery) - use chrome go to 192.168.0.1

If you can not get into CFE miniweb or ddwrt recovery, then there is no way for you to flash to asus or back to dlink firmware easily (need to open up and use usb ttl).
Caroscell selling the cable for $19 . Not worth to get. Better get a used router to play with

- Yes

Did you set the mac address correctly when you edit the cfe file ?

- Key in router MAC address and didn’t plus 4 as dunno how to do so.

IPv4/static IP (192.168.1.3 subnet 255.255.255.0) in your PC ? then use chrome go to 192.168.1.1

- key in this Ipv4/static IP

or
(192.168.0.3 subnet 255.255.255.0 - in case still in dlink recovery) - use chrome go to 192.168.0.1

- after key in the static IP and CFE Miniweb appeared . Then clear the NVRM value and upload the files. Immediately the completion % started.

After completion of the uploading , Asus logo appeared and login in to 192.168.1.1 and configured the setting .

Upload the Asus. Zip files given by you using the system manual upload function as the Asus recovery tool required the router to be in Recovery mode. Also used the Asus apps to upgrade the latest firmware

Now running the aimesh software and noticed the download speed is significantly faster.

Do I carry out all the step to do the same to set up another router?

Thank you so much for guiding me thru the whole process.

I followed this IPv4/static IP (192.168.1.3 subnet 255.255.255.0) assigned manually to the ethernet connection. This is provided by Bro Amat

The +4 for MAC address is because of guest network, ie, 2.4Ghz is using the same mac address as WAN, eg 00:00:00:00:00:08, so, since ac66u has 3 guest network available, the 2.4ghz guest network will be assigned 09, 0A and 0B, thus, 5Ghz need to use 0C, that is why +4 (08 +4 = 0C).

If you never add +4 to 5ghz, maybe asus firmware can update it automatically, just check the mac address for WAN/2.4Ghz/5Ghz in network map (2.4ghz/5ghz tab). If same MAC address for 2.4Ghz/5Ghz, don't know how it will affect though.

Yesterday while testing I noticed one thing, without Ai protection, LAN speedtest was 950Mbps, but if turn on Ai protection, LAN speedtest dropped 100Mbps to 840Mbps.

Also, 868l 2.4ghz dlink original firmware is about 50Mbps, after flashed to ac66u, the 2.4Ghz speed was half of that, only about 25Mbps. 5Ghz not affected.

If using mesh I think better disable 2.4Ghz.

Yes, you can carry out the same steps as before, use asus rescue if you could not get to cfe miniweb.

the cpu is quite weak. if you enable anything it easily reach 100% and slow everything down.

Haha. God riddance....I don't know what I did or do finally it works out of thin air...feels like bloody hell with the freakiest DC when uploading the files...and not a slightest idea and sudden the router main page appears.
